My goodness, that was 24 years ago now - how time flies!
The so-called Funk Renaissance is perhaps the appropriate term for some other CDs by Nils Landgren and his Funk Unit, but not for this CD, even if the very opening number suggests it and indeed more funk is to come. On this one-hour musical journey, the Swedish trombonist and singer took illustrious guests on board and visited completely different areas (by the way, there's only little singing on this disc), and that becomes clear already from the second track, the title song. That's more that elegiac ECM sound you'd expect from a Scandinavian jazz musician. As the CD runs, one is reminded of (the electric) Miles Davis, and of the Crusaders. 5000 Miles is a varied and convincing image of what was going on in jazz around the turn of the millennium. One could say that, there in 1999 already but also still, restoration and cultivation have carried more weight than innovation and renewal, a general phenomenon that can be observed in the music of the last thirty years or so. Anyway, that sound still sounds convincing for the most part, thanks in no small part to the great contributions from the musicians. Bruce Swedien had his fingers in the mix when it came to mixing, and Claes Persson in the mastering.
