Playa Paraíso - Cayo Coco Beach Resort is frequently commended for its friendly and attentive staff, though service can sometimes be inconsistent. While the rooms and grounds often receive praise for their cleanliness, guests have pointed out maintenance shortcomings. Despite the lively atmosphere with music and entertainment, some visitors find it too loud, disrupting those in search of peace. The resort's value is questioned by guests who feel the dining and cleanliness do not meet their expectations for the price. Amenities generally receive positive notes, although occasional shortages are mentioned.

Hotel Playa Paraiso has a spectacular beach and lovely, helpful staff. It was our first time visiting this resort, but not our first time to Cayo Coco. Yordanis Rosado Gorrin who works in the reception department gave us the perfect room for the week - building 4, 3rd floor, ocean view with a king bed and a cot. It was so close to everything and he was most helpful in making our stay comfortable. We always had great service at all the bars whether we tipped or not. The beach bar crew were our favourite. We were able to get chairs at the beach every day around 10am and just sat under the shady trees, which was good enough for us. We spent our days at the beach and our evenings in the theatre watching the great entertainment performances. One negative about the theatre - please turn down the volume! The speakers are incredibly loud - too loud! We only spent one day at the pool, but it was clean and fun...not too much shade available though. The snack bar is super close to the pool and we had fries and hotdogs there a few times, which was convenient if you didn't want to go to the buffet. There's also a lunch rancheon near the beach with a small buffet. It had the basics and enough to fill our tummies. There was a lot of offerings at the buffet for breakfast (eggs, omelettes, toast, fruit, cereal, yogurt, etc.), lunch and dinner. There was even good flavour to everything and we did not bring our own condiments. It is very repetitive and we were tired of the same things by the end of the week, but totally understand the shortages in Cuba and are mindful of that. They try their best with what they have. The biggest negative for me was that my 10 year old and I must have drank or eaten something "off" as we had terrible tummies for the last few days - even Pepto and Immodium wouldn't help. I think we were served tap water in our refilled water bottles as the water smelled like the pool. I can't say for sure, but it definitely put a damper on things. We ate at all of the a la cartes - Cuban, Portuguese and Italian and we liked them all. I would definitely go back to stay at Hotel Playa Paraiso for a good price. We booked last minute and paid dirt cheap...I think I might be disappointed with things if we paid more. Go with an open mind and don't sweat the small stuff and you will have a good time. We brought cat treats as there are LOTS of friendly cats in the lobby and out and about. Also, bring lots of sunscreen and medication. We did bring snacks as well and I was happy we did.

Nice beach, though only about 100 meters of it right in front of the resort are good for swimming barefoot - other places you have to cross the riff; miles of a beach good for walking.
Good rooms, mosquito screen on the balcony - can sleep without the AC.
Things break down often (AC, safe, shower, lights, etc.) and taking effort to get repaired, but it's normal for Cuba.
Food: we did NOT get poisoned, YEY!!!
Don't eat precooked stuff from the pails;
If you want fresh veggies, come to the opening of the buffet;
Get your food cooked in front of you;
Fruit's good;
Lots of cheese;
Decent yogurts for breakfast, just don't touch the open carafe - there are dead flies on the bottom;
Deserts are made entirely of sugar, but edible;
Soups are ok;
Salami (when supplied) are ok, but Murtadellas are questionable;
Bacon is actually a very fat ham, and they've got no clue how to cook it;
A la carte restaurants are a bit poor and the food is primitive, I've usually went to the buffet after those;
Riccardo is very nicely deep fraying fresh fish on the beach, but it's a bit too oily for the everyday eating;
And, of cause, it's Cuba - any day something might happen to be not in supply, but don't forget you've also paid only the Cuban price, so you should accept it.
If you are careful, food is sufficient for a week's survival.
DON'T FORGET YOUR OWN MUG!!! - beach or pool bar might be out of cups!!!
When checking in, make sure that there are beach towels in your room, or you might never get it, consider bringing your own too.
Alcohol is on the simple side, but sufficient.
Overall good value for the price.

The food was absolutely terrible. I'm still sick couple days after being home. The bathrooms stink, toilets don't flush and no toilet paper half the time. The absolute worst thing was that I got eaten alive by bedbugs. So itchy and burning. Still haven't brought anything into the house. The entertainment was great. The beach, ocean and pool great. But people claim the lounges for the day even if not using so it's really hard to get one. All things considered I won't be back there. I'm still sick

Amazing can only start this review, we had such a great experience from booking this trip to return. Once booked I contacted Yordanis Gorrin about our needs. He went out of his way and made this trip even better, I have been to Cuba many times but my partner had never been and for a 1st time visit he was so impressed! Yesmely and Claudia also did wonders making sure we had everything we needed! Most defiantly go back!!! Customer service is #1
I respect everyone’s comments but ponder this before you complain….
A vacation should be an adventure…..as long as the bed is clean what else in the room matters you’re not there to spend time in your room…..food…..you know it’s very bland but theirs plenty to choose from……think outside the box…bring spices if you need the kick, bring mayo and make a macaroni salad,
Vacations are a gift to ourselves and the adventure is what YOU make of it!!! See you in the sun!!!

PROS:
- great incorporation of kids at the evening shows
- stellar nighttime performances!
- beautiful beach
- small sized property so it was easy to get around
- kids club (but could use some upgraded coloring books and games)
- tasty slush drinks
- nice staff
- the pizza stand (the pizza was great, but it was disappointing having to wait 1 hr in line)
- churros at the beach

CONS
- the bathroom in my bedroom is dated with rusted handles and faucets, stained tub
- the 1 hr wait in line for the pizza
- the lineup to get into the buffet for dinner at 6pm
- the inconsistency of foods (no bread or fries on some days)
- no juice available at the dinner buffet (wine, beer, water, and cola only)
- Difficulty reserving a-la-carte restaurants (we weren't able to get any)
- hard to get a pool side chair in the mornings; you have to get up early a reserve a chair
- the music at the pool is terrible. Why are we listening to boring muzak and Celine Dion ??? Where is the Cuban music???

Despite the cons, it wasn't enough to ruin my trip. We paid peanuts for this trip so you get what you pay for... We were 2 adults and 2 toddlers. I would return again just for the nighttime shows and beach. My kids still talk about how much fun they had. Waiting in line for dinner was annoying so we opted to eat later around 730pm. The lack of food here and there was understandable considering covid and Cuba, so we just rolled with it. Again, not serious enough to ruin our trip.

Non-resort items but good to know for traveling:
- It is common to not stamp your passport upon arrival. If you really want a stamp in
your passport, you can ask the customs officer.
- E-cigarettes/vapes are not allowed in Cuba. Some people around us had their e-
cigarettes confiscated. Some were able to keep them (missed by x-ray and
screening). If you bring your vape, you will run the risk of getting it taken away
- It is probably not a bad idea to do your customs form online and get a QR code. We
didn’t and had no problem in Cayo Coco airport customs. They asked if we had a
QR code, we said no, and they gave us a paper form. However, a couple we met at
our resort travelled through WestJet Vacations, and were denied boarding because
they did not have their QR code. They had to fork out an extra $1200 for their trip.
We flew through Air Canada Vacations and had no problem
- The exit cash tax is no longer required by customs – it is included in your airfare with Air
Canada

Resort things:
The check in process seemed to move pretty slowly. We had one person in our party stand in line and the other wait for the bags off the shuttle. They scan the passports of everyone, so make sure to give the line person all the passports. The front desk agents were cordial.

The room was very clean. The fridge had some rust but smelled like it was recently and thoroughly cleaned. The drawers in the dresser were all surprisingly very clean. The bathroom was clean but showed signs of age. The bath/shower has a body wand sprayer on a holder rather than a typical shower head. The water pressure was good and hot water came quickly. The only issue I had with the shower was that the sprayer would pop out of the holder if the water pressure was too high and spray directly at eye height. The floor of the tub had some give to it. There is also quite a drop from the tub to the floor (a few feet), so if you have mobility issues, it might be something to look out for/request a specific room type.

Overall, extremely clean. One white bath towel had a yellow stain on it, so we just used it as a floor towel. The curtains had a spot with signs of mildew. The room did not have a super strong mildew smell. We brought a damp trap and that helped get rid of the slight smell.

Our toilet didn’t flush and the shower didn’t drain properly when we arrived. We notified the front desk the next morning and it was fixed by the time we got back to our room in the afternoon.

Our patio door did not lock and was missing the door handle on the outside. We felt safe-ish on the second floor.

The nightly entertainment was interesting. There was some dancing and lip syncing a few nights, a rock band one night (they were really good and got the crowd going), Cuba show and dancing lessons.

Some of the in-house entertainment was pretty suggestive and not family friendly in my opinion. The women were dressed and danced very provocatively. Maybe a great show for the dads. A lot of families with small children left the show in droves on these particular evenings. The last evening we were there, the “entertainment” was five girls from the audience on stage. We thought it was a pre-show so we stuck around. It wasn’t. The girls had to walk “sexy”, do a pose, collect the most amount of shoes, and chug a beer. It wasn’t the greatest show. It was about half an hour long and that was it.

My only suggestion for the entertainment (both day and night) would be to turn the volume down on the microphones and speak slower. If you say the same thing every week, it tends to get faster and faster, but for us hearing it for the first time, it was really difficult to understand. A lot of times people had no idea what was going on or being requested of them. The volume was so loud that it made it extra difficult to hear and enjoy.

The piece of paper Air Canada Vacations gave us said to meet the AC rep in the lobby. We arrived at the noted time but she was nowhere to be found. The AC rep can be found in the theatre area if anyone else is looking for her at their designated time. The AC rep gave us information on excursions and had some good advice about exchanging money. She did tell us there is a VIP lounge at the CCC airport, which will allow you to get priority check in and seating arrangements. She informed us that in Cuba you are not able to pre-purchase your seats, or pick them at check in. Check in must be done at the airport due to government rules. We thought she was just trying to sell us the VIP airport package ($29 USD pp), so fact checked this, and indeed, you cannot pre-purchase and select your seats prior to check in. We had a friend in Canada check and they got the same error message we had (we were on roam like home in Cuba and not on wifi). When it was 24 hours to check in, we were in fact able to check in and pick our seats. The boarding passes were not available, but our seats were reserved. Just had to pick up the boarding pass from the Air Canada agent at the airport. So if you want to select your seats, you can still do so 24 hours in advance…don’t waste your $29 USD.

All forms of currency were being accepted as tips at the resort. Loonies, toonies, USD, Canadian paper money, and Cuban Pesos were all good. The resort workers cannot exchange coins at the bank, but they were really smart and asked guests to trade $20 worth of coins for a bill. We only exchanged $20 CAD to 1400 Cuban Pesos. That was plenty for tips for the week. The Air Canada Rep said 100 pesos is a really good tip. She advised to not exchange large sums of money…you lose a lot in the exchange rate, CAD and USD are accepted, and you can’t use or exchange Cuban pesos once you leave Cuba.

Food. The food was as expected. The food was pretty bland but we never starved. There was always something to eat. We ate a lot of rice, bread, and ice cream at the buffet and chicken/ham sandwiches at the snack bar. We brought lots of snacks and were very happy with the chips and cookies to supplement our meals. Talking to another person who knew people at Memories, he said the food at Paraiso was better than Memories. There was a lobster dinner the Tuesday night and that was probably the best meal we had at the buffet. You are allowed 3 a la carte reservations for your week. I recommend reserving these as soon as you get there (they are open in the morning and until 3pm I think). We waited a few days and were only able to get late reservation times.

At El Rancho, we had the shrimp cocktail, banana, chicken, pulled pork, and ice cream. They did not have stuffed potatoes and only had ice cream as a dessert option. They were kind of lacking on the water refills, but the service was friendly and welcoming.

At the Italian Restaurant, we thought we had to order from the appy menu, but to our nice surprise, they brought out antipasto and bread. They didn’t have spaghetti in stock, but they had short pasta, which was basically thick macaroni noodles. We had short pasta with carbonara and bolognese. The servings were really small, but the food was good. The service was excellent. There was live music and they were really entertaining. We had ice cream and tiramisu for dessert….and then they brought out pizza at the same time. This was also a surprise, but we were happy for the food.

There were shortages throughout the week. There was only cheese at the resort maybe 3 days of the week. The pizza station was not operating.

Make sure you go early to reserve your chairs at the pool and beach. There are signs at the beach saying not to reserve before 7am, but people did. There are guys at the pool and beach to help move chairs. They were super helpful and friendly.

We went snorkeling just out front off the beach and saw some fish, a giant starfish, and lots of jellyfish. The jellyfish were small and clear and about 2-3 feet below surface. There was one large moon jelly at the surface. There is an option if you don’t want to fork out big bucks to go snorkeling on the catamaran through your travel provider (pictures of price lists attached). The hobby cat run through the resort was $25CAD per adult ($10 child (?)) for 1 hr 20 min snorkeling. We didn’t go as we were happy with the free snorkeling out front, but it looked popular and everyone wore lifejackets.

We went to the Flamenco Market, where the massage, bowling, and disco are. We just checked out the shops. It was not super big - maybe 6 to 8 stands, but it was something to do. We found some cute souvenirs. It was a quick and safe walk to get here from the resort.

The front desk staff helped us organize a taxi and an English-speaking driver. He took us out to some lookout areas including Playa Prohibido and Lenny’s. Highly recommend doing this for a fun and affordable activity. It was $35CAD/$25USD round trip for the whole car.

We were really happy that we packed the following items: peanut butter, mayo, ketchup, mustard, chips, cookies, granola bars, bug spray, extra sunscreen, Ziploc bags, snorkel stuff, small cash for tipping (loonies and toonies, US $1), flip flops/water shoes for the sharp shells on the beach, and gifts for the staff: gloves for gardeners, kids clothes and toys, sunglasses, colouring books and crayons, toiletries, screwdriver set, watches. We wished we brought jam or jelly to have another breakfast option.

The mosquitos and/or sandflies were pretty bad early morning and nighttime. We wore long sleeves and pants and spray and still had a few bites. During peak day hours you should be okay.

The resort was quiet and chill. We could hear the parties at the neighboring resorts and they had pool parties and more dancing. We were happy with our affectionately named “geriatric” resort.

My favourite part of this resort was how long and beautiful the beach was. I went for daily walks and saw lots of cool stuff.

Special shout out to some of the particular staff who made our stay awesome: Denise who made sure our room was spic and span and that we felt welcomed, Daniel, the lobby bartender, Leidy the snack bar bartender, and Roberto the buffet server.

I’ve been to all-inclusive resorts in Varadero, Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. It’s my first time in Cayo Coco and very first time travelling abroad with my little kid so I had done a lot of researches and decided to stay at Playa Paraiso. I don’t regret it and definitely will come back.

- location: it’s the second bus stop which took about 25 mins from the airport. I believe it’s critical due to travelling with a grumpy kid after hours of flights, going through customs and collecting luggage.

- Room: checkin was easy and quick. The room was spacious. I requested first floor to avoid carrying a baby and a stroller multiple times every day. I also requests a crib but ended up with three twin beds where I could push them all against each other making a super king size. The bathroom had a nice tub and i didn’t experience any hot water issues. The only complaint was the poor toilet flushing.

- Meals: it’s getting repetitive but I was always full three meals a day. They had rice, bread, beef, pork, chicken, eggplants, cucumbers, salad and many other choices. The specialities such as grills, roasted pig and seafood were lined up.

- Snacks: 24 hrs snack bar offered hot dogs, sandwiches and fries. Kids loved them. Bring ketchup and mayo.

- Drinks: had beer and mojito. Not much comments because I am not a drinker but I supposed they weren’t different from Varadero and other resorts in Cayo Coco area.

- Juice: orange and pineapple were amazing.

- Beach bar: must try the fried dough and plantains.

- Kid friendly: super friendly. Two pools for kids (one is in baby club). Every staff was just so nice to my daughter. Worth to mention the resort is nicely maintained (no safety hazard) and road is well paved for strollers.

-Others/tips:
- shows were excellent. Pool activities were fun.
- Lots of smokers (even though I also am but not comfortable to smell them indoor).
- The beach was nice but difficult to find a palapa available after 7am.
- Cayo coco airport is shabby. No ac, no elevators and crowded. Be prepared.
- If you travel with little toddlers, bring lots of diapers, formulas, pouches and snacks.
- Being Kleenex and toilet paper.
- Pack mosquito repellents.
