The theme, wherein the protagonist, as a freshly minted attorney, decides to elbow her way into the old boys domain, and at the same time do something measureable about the heretofore essentailly unrepentant, and unpenalized wife beaters in her county, was a fine place to start. But after "starting" the story never really got up a head of steam. Rather it trudged along, getting from one point to the next, all the while giving off little to no energy. The words were there, but there was no edge. It didn't read exactly like a police report, but it didn't read like a drama either. And what is fiction without a little drama? A little "decoration"...some "color" or at least something more than "just the facts." Of course I am not suggesting letting a story get out of control to the extent that it turns into melodrama either. There are plenty of those kinds of stories available...and they are most always awful. But there is a fine line, and fear not, "Sly Fox" never came close to it. Even though the story had a beginning, middle, and end, it never really got out of low gear. A theme that didn't have to be at all boring, ended up being just that...boring.
Ms. Pirro, I'm hoping unintentionally, dragged out just about every shop-worn sub-plot that's ever been incorporated into a piece of legal fiction. I wont't list them, because
it's not fair to give away the plot. but I have to comment on what has been referred to as a "hot" sex scene. Maybe some readers thought of it that way, but I felt it fell flat. Sex always sells, and I have no issues with using it as a device to wake up the reader. But it really has to rise above the level of a pro forma clause inserted into a legal brief.
Ms. Pirro's legal career speaks for itself. She is most certainly no lightweight. Not by anyone's standard. Her life has "winner" written all over it. The appellation "dynamic hard charger," will probably be sandblasted into her headstone. But as a writer she isn't John Gresham just yet. Of course nothing in this life is guaranteed to any of us. But it strikes me that the publisher thought that her name would do the trick...and I suppose to some extent it has. Just not for me...well, actually it did indeed hook me first time around...but it ain't happening twice. Once bitten is enough.
The book is average for the genre. I chose the book out of curiosity about Judge Jeanine Pirro. I understand this book is a semi-autobiographical novel. The story kept me engaged throughout. The story was interesting particularly about the creation of a Domestic Violence Unit. The book surprised me as it was better than I anticipated it would be. If there are more books in the series, I will read them as I like a good courtroom drama.
I read this as an e-book via my Kindle App for my iPad. This book has 304 pages and was published in 2012.
