PRESTON LOVE - OMAHA BAR-B-Q. Kent Records KST 540. Stereo, 12" vinyl LP reissue. Preston Love (alto saxophone); Shuggie Otis (guitar); Johnny Otis (piano, organ); and others. Saxophonist Preston Love was far more associated with the early sounds of West Coast R&B in the 1940s and 1950s than he was with modern soul-funk. However, he, like numerous other R&B vets, actually did make some recordings in a much more modern style that have been relatively ignored. By the time this CD came out in 2001 early funk was undergoing a renaissance among collectors, spurring the reissue of Love's rare 1969 LP. Helping Love out on this collection of instrumental soul-funk tunes were the legendary Johnny Otis on piano and vibraphone, Clifford Soloman on tenor sax, and, on one of his earliest recordings, legendary guitarist (and son of Johnny Otis) Shuggie Otis, just 14 years of age when this was made. It's a solid set of instrumentals that bubble along nicely, with both grit and jazzy accents. Shuggie Otis' bluesy playing is already stinging and imaginative at this point, sometimes with a slightly distorted wah-wah edge that gives the R&B-based jams a late-1960s feel, and, in fact, he and his father co-wrote most of the material. On "Cream Dream," the sounds take on a slightly psychedelic hue, with the combination of underwater bubbling noises and way-in-the-background flute by Love. The good news: this is a smokin' album of bluesy jazz that features a very young Shuggie Otis on guitar. The bad news: it only has about 27 minutes of music on it. It also isn't cheap, as imports go, but I still think it was worth the purchase. This guy Preston Love was apparently a veteran alto sax player in various big bands in the 1940s. He hooked with Johnny Otis and his "show" in the 60s, and they played together for two decades. This album was recorded in 1969 when Shuggie was only 14 years old. He displays his impressive guitar chops on almost (but not all) every track here, giving the tunes a decidedly bluesy and soulful vibe. Preston Love not only plays sax, but also flute. In fact, one of the tracks is mostly a flute and vibes piece, that reminds me a bit of Mulatu Astake. The vibes on that track are provided by Johnny Otis, who is all over the place on this album. The senior Otis also plays some lively piano on other tracks, and produced the album. But the real star is young Shuggie, and fans of his other recordings will want to hear him tear it up on these tracks, all of which were written by Johnny and Shuggie. Very exciting album, and what a great cover!
In life Preston was an ass - his arrogance and radio personality were as abrasive as one could imagine. However, the music on the album is good. The guest appearance of Shuggie Otis only adds to this albums history and mystique.
