I hear many times from past students about how their time at Oaklands has made a significant and positive impact on their lives – and I am proud to say that many of our past students keep in touch with us and are still very much part of the Oaklands family. We’re fortunate to have two wonderful main campuses, one in Welwyn Garden City and one in St Albans, as well as a third, smaller campus in Borehamwood. Each has a different character and is shaped to provide a highly enjoyable student experience. We are also proud of our nationally recognised centres of excellence in the Creative Industries, Science & Technology, Sports, Hospitality and Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). This year we mark our hundredth year, building on a proud tradition of educating generations of people who are fulfilling their dreams all over the world, having been part of the Oaklands College community. We are very proud of all our past and current students’ successes.

Value Added A Level Programme We provide an exciting range of A Level and BTEC/CACHE/UAL courses which are combined in order to provide our students with the best possible grade outcomes, which maximises their choice of university. The benefits of this combined provision includes: l Modular assessment of BTEC/CACHE/UAL which is closer aligned to

university study l Significantly enhanced grade potential l Opportunity to include AS Level Extended Project Qualification – enhancing overall grade and skill outcomes In addition, we provide detailed support to each of our students in preparing their personal statement, as well as preparing for interviews and other selection processes to ensure they are able to secure their first choice of university. Non A Level Equivalent Qualifications

What can I study?

BTEC Diplomas provide a practical, real-world approach to learning and an alternative route to traditional GCSEs and A Levels. They focus on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education.

The suite of ‘value-added’ courses provides an exciting mix of both traditional A Levels and nonA Level but equivalent subjects so that students can benefit from both types of pedagogy (the linear A Level and modular BTEC/CACHE/UAL). Students taking these subjects will not only be supported to achieve good quality grade outcomes but also gain additional life skills that will prepare them for study and life at university, Apprenticeships and employment.

BTEC qualifications were established over 25 years ago and are recognised by universities, employers and professional bodies across the United Kingdom and in over 100 countries worldwide. The table below shows how many UCAS points each of the most common qualifications are worth. For example, an Extended Diploma at Triple Distinction* (D*D*D*) equates to 3 A Levels at A*.

A Levels cannot be studied individually and can only be taken in combination with the relevant vocational qualification.

What will I learn? Springfield is split into programmes depending on the needs of the individual student. These include:

The main aims of these courses is to promote basic independence, develop choice making skills through the use of pictures and symbols and to develop the students individual communication strategies using Makaton, PECS, Voca, Eye Gaze and other assisted communication technologies.

Core Skills and Encounters These programmes are designed for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties who require a sensory based curriculum. The programs are centered on individual need, but are intended to address the most basic need for sensory discrimination and self-awareness as a starting point. Learning will be encouraged through activities that will develop the ability to “select, integrate and derive meaning from” these experiences.

There is recognition that communication from students is likely to be heavily dependent on carer interpretation and staff continuity will be maintained as far as possible in order to facilitate this. Some students will be able to work with early stages of symbol recognition alongside objects of reference. Choices and Options These courses are for students with a severe learning disability requiring significant assistance to access the curriculum but capable of engaging in more formal activities that will encourage basic independence skills where appropriate.

All students are empowered through switch work and expressive communication strategies to exercise control over their own environment, allowing them to make meaningful choices. Where appropriate, students will be supported and encouraged to develop simple independent living skills such as basic food preparation and self-help skills. Continues...

Springfield (continued...) Foundation and Young Persons Programme These courses are for school leavers with severe learning difficulties who need a secure, accessible introduction to college life. Learners may have a range of needs and disabilities including physical disabilities, challenging behaviour, autism, downs syndrome and/or experience poor mental heath. Students on the Young Person Programme are functioning at a relatively high cognitive and academic level (high P levels and some aspects at Entry 1). Foundation students have a similar level of need but may be working at a lower cognitive level than students in the Young Persons Programme. The main emphasis throughout these programmes is to encourage and develop communication, independence and life skills, functional English and maths and appropriate social behaviours. Developing and improving communication strategies underpins all activities throughout the week so that learners acquire a range of skills to help them express themselves. Focus Provision These programmes are for students on the autistic spectrum whose autism can have a profound effect on how they interact with the wider world. There are currently five groups streamed by ability.

Focus programs provide an environment that is ‘autism friendly’, where the learner feels valued and can learn through consistent and predictable routines. Self Help and Independence are a key aspect of all programs. Increased confidence and ability to manage everyday tasks such as taking care of belongings, preparing simple meals and self-care skills form a basis of the support given to develop independence in daily living activities. Staff are skilled at the gradual withdrawal of support, encouraging further independent activity. Photographs, pictures, PECS symbols and other communication resources are employed to support the development of skills All sessions are planned to provide stability and consistency and give warning of any changes whilst being alert to possible signs of stress and anxiety. Students are likely to have a low tolerance of change, may take longer to settle into the college environment and struggle with social interactions, communication and flexibility of thought. We have a large team of Herts Steps Instructors who support students to develop self-management and self-regulatory behaviours. Supporting the development of self-regulatory behaviour is at the core of all programs. Students are individually targeted towards developing their working relationships and peerto-peer interaction. Activities are structured to facilitate opportunities for working co-operatively, gaining confidence, listening to others and participating in group activities.

At Oaklands, we use a range of alternative and augmentative communication methods to support and encourage functional communication development. These are not used in isolation and a student may use several of these methods.

We strive to ensure that we carry over already established communication strategies, although within the context of transition, needs may change and with team agreement these may be appropriately modified.

Methods that are currently used in college are Makaton signing, symbols/photos, a diverse of communication aids, communication books/ passports and objects of reference.

The multi-disciplinary approach is adopted at Oaklands. We work very closely with families, carers, college staff, physiotherapists and previous SALTs. Communication underpins all learning and therefore we are committed to providing specialised support and therapy to each student’s individually identified needs.

The individual timetable will allow time to combine both academic and sporting requirements, and stretch students to achieve in both areas. Sporting provision will come in the form of high quality coaching, additional hours of contact time with the coaches compared to many other establishments, alongside strength and conditioning, competitive opportunities, technical and tactical analysis of performance, medical, psychological and nutritional support.

Emerging Athlete Support Programme The EASP aims to support athletes whose sporting pathway is not one of our core academy programmes by supporting the holistic development of the athlete. Prime candidates for our EASP pathway are typically engaged with their clubs or

This is done through a strong team ethic within the training group which trains together every day. Alongside this is a full physiotherapy and strength and conditioning program run by our dedicated cycling specific Physio and Strength and Conditioning lead. The academy has an endurance focus which caters best for road and time trail riders but in which track, cyclo-cross and mountain bike riders will also flourish. Its home is the lanes and trails of Hertfordshire as well as Gosling stadium Velodrome (which is booked each week) and Redbridge Cycling Centre which is a key partner of the academy. Riders can continue to race for their own club or team whilst training with the academy.

Progress and Opportunities With strong links with European and UK domestic teams we provide the perfect stepping stone for those good enough to turn pro. The programme also forms the first half of the East of England Cycling Academy Pathway (EECAP) run in partnership with Writtle University College in Essex which has a Cycling Degree course and progressive training environment for riders aged 18+. Programe Structure The academy allows riders to train and study an appropriate post 16 qualification by dedicating half of every day to training. The whole of Wednesday is given over to a long morning ride followed by an afternoon of physio appointments and ‘Cycling Theory’ which combines tactical and technical lessons on subjects such as race craft, nutrition and the history of the sport, as well as allowing for guest speakers and race video analysis. The other half of the week is taken up with academic studies.
