Going to Mavericks game- hotel choice?

My son and I will be in Dallas to see a Mavericks game 1st week of March. We'd like to stay at a good hotel, either near Amer Airlines arena, if the area is nice... otherwise an area where we can walk around safely, see and get a feel for Dallas. The area is more important than price or proximity to the arena, assuming there is public transit available. Any suggestions?

The W is across the street from AA Center in the Victory area. I have walked around Victory at night with my kids and never felt unsafe.

I'll look into the W - thanks. The area being safe is important to us, so we can stroll around.

I've mostly walked from House of Blues to AA Center with my kids. Sat and had gelato at Paciugo and watched the jumbotrons in the plaza - kids loved it. Then walked around the area that has shops, restaurants, etc. People live in the lofts, apts nearby and were walking their dogs. I would consider it safe.

DART light rail does provide special service to Victory Station and AAA for Mavs games.

This could factor into where you could stay if the W proves too steep. You can catch either the red or blue line to the West Ed Station, then change to the special DART trains that go to Victory.

i live near the AAC, the area is called uptown. there are lots of nice hotels in this area, the W is the closest because it shares victory plaza with the AAC. however some other great options within less than a mile are: the crescent, the ritz-carlton, the mansion, and hotel zaza. all are very near the AAC and have a nice, walkable surrounding area. have fun, and go mavs!!!

We had a good trip to Dallas. Stayed at the Hyatt Regency, which worked out well. Right at Union Station, so we could take DART anywhere, also within easy walking distance of restaurants, downtown etc. Really convenient. YO Steakhouse served me a wonderful piece of buffalo, too!

I am so glad you posted back to let us know how your trip worked out. Any other trip report items you want to share? How was the Hyatt? Where else did you eat, drink, get merry?

I liked the Hyatt. A bit busy and bustling perhaps, but overall the staff was very friendly and helpful, particularly with info on getting around on DART, walking into town, etc. The AA center experience was ok... the dining lounge was very disappointing, with horrible service. Definitely would not do that again. Crowd seemed bored in general, was similar to a Lakers game. We liked walking through the west end, that was quite nice and felt clean and safe. Overall, a nice trip.
