History of Lobkowicz Palace

Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle was built around 1550 by the Czech nobleman, Jaroslav Pernštejn, as a representative seat for his family.

Significant historical events are connected with the palace. When the Second Defenestration of Prague took place in 1618 in the Old Royal Palace of Prague Castle, the Catholic governors thrown out of the window by Protestant rebels sought refuge in Lobkowicz Palace, which Polyxena of Pernštejn granted.

It was not until 1623, when Polyxena of Pernštejn married Zdeněk Vojtěch of Lobkowicz, that the palace came into the possession of the Lobkowicz noble family. Over the next three centuries, the family rebuilt the palace in places.

The baroque palace remained in the possession of the Lobkowicz family until 1939. In 1939, the magnificent building and the entire Lobkowicz family property were confiscated by the Nazi regime. After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the family got their property back.

However, the condition was short-lived. In 1948, the property was once again confiscated, this time by the communist regime. Only in 2002, after a 12-year restitution process, Lobkowicz Palace was returned to its rightful owners.

Since 2007, the palace has been open to the public as a private museum. Today it is the only privately owned building in the Prague Castle complex.
