Robert Vaughn Obituary

Actor Robert Vaughn, known for roles on television's "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and movies such as "The Magnificent Seven" and "Superman III," died Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, of leukemia. He was 83.

Vaughn began his acting career in the 1950s, his first film role an uncredited appearance in "The Ten Commandments" in 1956. In 1959, he was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in "The Young Philadelphians." The next year, he appeared as Lee in "The Magnificent Seven." Before his death, Vaughn was the last surviving actor of those who portrayed the movie's seven main characters.

But it was Vaughn's role as Napoleon Solo on the TV spy drama "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." that cemented his fame. Running for four seasons, from 1964 to 1968, the show was instantly popular and spawned numerous spy genre copycat shows.

In the 1980s, Vaughn appeared in a recurring role on the final season of "The A-Team," and as villain Ross Webster in the movie "Superman III." Continuing to act late in life, he co-starred as a grifter on the British television show "Hustle" from 2004 to 2012.

Vaughn is survived by his wife, Linda Staab, and children Cassidy Vaughn and Caitlin Vaughn.

For me, Robert Vaughn was always the Man from U.N.C.L.E. I used to record the audio of the show each week to listen to with my brother Bob until the next show. Suave and cool, he was a great role model for kids. Met him in NYC for a private Meet and Greet with some other fans, and my daughter Erin who he liked because she was in film school and I chatted with him for a few minutes after the meeting. Tammy Hayes his great friend was there and created a Memorial bench fund to install a bench with his name on it at a park in Ridgefield, Conn. It is there now. I shook his hand, and signed his bio for me. We were all thrilled to spend time with him. What a storyteller! Condolances to his wife and family, and friends ...

My heartfelt condolences go to the Vaughn family. I am and always have been a lifelong fan of Robert as far back as the U.N.C.L.E. years. As an aspiring 8yr old boy, I would follow the show each week. Now..I feel as though that part of my childhood has been taken away...ripped from my very soul. He was an inspiration and my idol. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Vaughn and family.
Dr. Vaughn was one of my favorite actors and he'll be greatly missed.
I enjoyed his performances heroic or villainous. Napoleon Solo was the epitome of suave, debonair cool and was my favorite of his characters.
He was always the most impeccably dressed and the most articulate of actors. Oh, that voice-smooth and menacing. RIP-RFV

I was fortunate to chat w/Dr. Vaughn about 2000 at a convention to raise funds for the SAG retirement home. Saw him handle really obnoxious questions through the years during promotion of his films as a gentleman could. Never lost his temper. Class act.
His underlying sincerity in his characters made them real. I see others have mentioned the drama "The Young Philadelphians" but check out "S.O.B."on the other side of his acting spectrum - outrageous comedy. He pulled that off too.
He was the reason my family started watching "The A Team"
Little did I know that my daughter would pursue the profession & is finishing up at AADA in Manhattan.
Finally, got to see his Emmy acceptance speech- always humble & remembers his mom's sacrifice to move him to LA.
My condolences to Linda & their children.
He will be missed for more than his celluloid contributions - he was a real person who took his craft seriously & earned his PhD. Now that is a family legacy!!!

I liked his deft comedy work. We need to laugh right now, so I reccommed "The Statue," a 1970's midnight classic (because it was "adult," for its time.) Vaughn is UN employee Niven's rival for his artist wife's affections-or is he? The film dodges the code with deft wit. Vaugn is phenominal with the witty dialogue that connects the story.

He had wit, he had style, he played Presidents and adult comedy characters. We will miss this vitalcomponent of "The Magnificent Seven."

I'll always remember you. Every week was special for me after High School because I waited to watch the MAN FROM UNCLE. Robert Vaughn, you were my favorite character and brought me happiness.
A special time for my friends and I was to see you at Drury Lane Martinique in Elmwood Park, a suburb of Chicago, in the play The Tender Trap. It was so much fun and we had a good day seeing the performance and getting to meet you. One of the movie characters that I'll always remember is the person you played in The Young Philadelphians.
Thank you for speaking up for the younger generation of the 1960's. My privilege was to work on the Presidential Campaign for Senator Robert Kennedy.
