I don’t think it will affect tourism much as people around the world are learning to live with covid and a surge was already expected given the relaxing of measures. The variant is present in other countries as well. So far, it does not appear to cause more severe disease. It will only be a concern if hospitals are overwhelmed.
The surge already started, no big deal just got to live with it. Your main concern is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated person in the group or vaccine not on the WHO EUL
More than vaccination, i am bothered about restrictions and quarantine. Heard hospitalization also increased these days.
Definitely need to be careful and wear masks, social distancing even if one to practice it personally. Tourists will be affected generally.. Only a few that's forced to travel for biz or urgent personal needs should be going there. If not, best to stay away for now.
Edited: 1 year ago#5 is just fearmongering. Continue to practise your hand hygiene and wear mask in crowded places but no need to avoid travel because of this. If it’s so scary, Malaysia will be affected too since so many Singaporeans have been going there for short getaways.

When Covid started, it was scary. I reckoned if I caught it, there was a 10% chance it would kill me.
So I've been vaccinated, and did catch it in July this year. It was like a bad bout of flu.
Covid is much less serious, hospitals are better equipped to handle the small number of severe cases.
New variants are no worse than new flu variants (which happen every year)
Covid is here to stay, it's amazing how many people still don't understand how the vaccines work...they DON'T stop you from catching covid, they protect you from falling seriously ill and ending up in hospital though. It also needs to be remembered that the vaccines have about 80% efficiency...so 2 in 10 people will always be vulnerable. Just accept that we will probably all contract covid again, probably multiple times but the symptoms will be something that we can cope with, in the same way that we cope with flu and the common cold.
Covid has mutated hundreds of times already into different strains and each time it becomes weaker. It's here to stay but if you have had your jabs then crack on with your life, the statistics now show that the vaccines are working brilliantly for the majority of people and that's all they need to do really. Thousands die of flu every year irrespective of the flu jab and covid will be the same unfortunately.
Guys.. the question is not about avoiding or following Covid protocols (sanitization , mask etc.) and noone is doubting vaccinations and their efficacies... also agree that hospitals are better equipped compared to last year... the main concern is do you really want to do all this (24X7 thinking about hospitals or quarantine; even if covid hits you, you have to be quarantined irrespective of whether it's serious or not) when we are spending so much for relaxing as tourists! I know it's personal choice and risk taking level... but at times locals know the ground reality much better than what is portrayed in media.
Edited: 1 year agoYour original question asked how it will affect tourism (which is a broad question but usually one would think in terms of the number of tourists, the number of flights, the operation hours of attractions and safe measures and other restrictions) whereas now you are asking whether it will affect your enjoyment (thinking about it all the time) and how it is no fun to get covid whether it is mild or not.
To put it in perspective, wherever you choose to travel to, the risk of getting covid exists. Even if you remain in your own country, the risk of getting covid is there. Factors like luck and one’s immune system play a part too. Whether you want to think/worry about it all the time is a personal choice. True, it is no fun having to isolate yourself while travelling overseas but life carries uncertainties. We aren’t crystal ball gazers. Having said that, I think stuff like hand hygiene are basic habits and not something to be disregarded just because one is holidaying.
New variants tend to be more transmissible and spread faster around the world. It is possible for there to be a new wave in other countries by the time you travel. Also note that the worldwide covid statistics may not be that accurate given many people just test themselves and recover at home.
Someone who thinks he is at a higher risk of getting seriously affected by covid should take necessary precautions and make adjustments to manage his exposure, just as he would make lifestyle and diet changes if he were assessed to be more suspectible to developing diabetes for instance.
I think people are way past the point of wanting blunt disruptive measures (circuit breakers, lockdowns, vaccination differentiation measures etc) that don’t take into consideration individuals’ occupation, lifestyle and other personal circumstances.
