An 82-year-old woman was still fighting for her life this weekend as gardaí continue to question a man about a horror hatchet attack at a Dundalk house.
The pensioner was among three women assaulted while visiting relatives on Friday. She is being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
And last night her condition was described as serious. Two other women injured in the noon-time attack are believed to have suffered less serious injuries.
Meanwhile, gardaí are still questioning a man they arrested in connection with the assaults.
The man was arrested at the scene on Friday.
It is believed the pensioner was visiting relatives at the Glenwood Estate, in Co. Dundalk, when a man arrived wielding a hatchet.
Several people were in the house when the horror hatchet attack unfolded. It is believed the attacker is known to the women who were attacked. The alarm was raised by a concerned neighbour.
According to locals, all the victims come from a well-known and well-respected family.
The man arrested was brought to Dundalk Garda Station for questioning after the incident.
A spokesman for An Garda Síochána said: ‘Gardaí in Dundalk were alerted to an incident at a residential property in Glenwood Estate, Dundalk, early this afternoon, Friday 3rd May 2024. Three women were injured and two were removed to Louth County Hospital, Dundalk, for treatment.’
The spokesman added: ‘One woman was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, with serious injuries.’
‘A man was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at a Garda station in County Louth under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 198.’
