An oral history of everyone's favorite fictional boy band: King of the Hill's 4 SKORE

The Episodes

We're first introduced to Chris, Calvin, Cool Chris, and Todd in S07E01 - Get Your Freak Off. After lecturing Bobby about disco dancing in the alley, Hank overhears a hip hop track playing on his discman. He reacts by asking, "What is this garbage?" Of course, it's none other than Pimp Franklin. Bobby informs Hank that Pimp Franklin doesn't need Hank's respect, because he don't pay no man no mind. Obviously disgusted by his choice in music, Hank tells Bobby to get in his truck, and, as they pull out of the driveway, Hank tosses the Pimp Franklin CD into their garbage can.

We then fast forward to Hank and Bobby walking around in CD Warehouse. Hank begins to reminisce about songs from back in his day, and how they were two-minute songs about people falling in love or burning down Georgia. After Bobby has finished selecting the albums he would like to purchase, Hank commandeers a parental listening booth in order to screen Bobby's music.

The scene then transitions to Hank having listened to all of the albums Bobby selected, and rejecting all of them. That is, until he gets to the final album, 4 SKORE. Hank begins to play the album, and this is where we first hear the dulcet tones of God Must Be Sad (Since He Left You Out Of Heaven). Hank reacts positively to the harmonious sound and informs advises Bobby that, "this is the kind of music you should be listening to." Hank continues to listen, as the track progresses into a soft ballad.

Later in the episode, we find Hank, Bobby, Joseph, Connie, and Jordan (Connie's study buddy from the Frontier Learning Center) at the Reliant Astrodome for a 4 SKORE concert. Much to his dismay, Hank is ushered up to the parent's section in the skybox. As the lights go down, Chris, Calvin, Cool Chris, and Todd appear on stage in conservative, light-colored suits, and we are once again introduced to, what we (and Hank) are led to believe is, the open lines of God Must Be Sad (Since He Left You Out Of Heaven). However, flames shoot up from the stage, Chris, Calvin, Cool Chris, and Todd tear off their suits, and they break into much more scandalous lyrics of Freak Friction. A they begin to thrust and gyrate their hips like those lizards on the Discover channel, a horrified Hank asks, "Todd...what are you doing?"

Chris, Calvin, Cool Chris, and Todd make one more appearance in S08E19 - Stressed for Success. Bobby continues to cram his brain full of pop culture facts and information by watching and episode of TRL Pop Up featuring 4 SKORE. Although we can't see Bobby's TV in this scene, it's assumed that he is watching the music video for Freak Friction.

The Album

Looking at the album cover, we can possibly infer that this is a self titled album, but it's still possible that it has a different name that was not included on the cover. We also do not know if this was the only album released by 4 SKORE, or if there were any other albums that came before or after this one. It's possible to that, after the success of this particular album, Cool Chris was offered a solo record deal, resulting in the breakup of 4 SKORE. But at this point, that's just a rumor, just like the one about Chris frosting his bangs. Dang internet. They don't care who's life they ruin.

The Songs

The full recordings of God Must Be Sad (Since He Left You Out Of Heaven) and Freak Friction can be found on the Songs In Animated Projects page on the official website of producer/songwriter Michèle Vice-Maslin

God Must Be Sad (Since He Left You Out Of Heaven) was written by Michèle Vice-Maslin, Larry Treadwell and Garland Testa, and produced and arranged by Vice-Maslin and Treadwell. The track was performed by Matt T.

Freak Friction was written by Michèle Vice-Maslin, Larry Treadwell and Garland Testa, and produced and arranged by Vice-Maslin and Treadwell. The track was performed by Matt T.

I scoured Google for any clue as to who Matt T is, but I came up empty. Unfortunately, it appears that his name being listed with only his last initial is simply too vague to find anything concrete. If anyone else has any information as to who this person is, they can let us know in the comments.

There is also a third song on Vice-Maslin's website under her King of the Hill tracks titled Bobby's Fantasy. According to IMDB, this song is credited to the soundtrack for S07E01 - Get Your Freak Off. However, this track does not actually make an appearance in the episode. I have no direct knowledge, but if I had to make an educated guess, I'm betting this song was written for a scene in which Bobby fantasizes about dancing with Jordan, after having danced with her briefly at the 4 SKORE concert. But your guess is as good as mine.
