BASED ON THE KINKY COMICS THAT SHOCKED THE WORLD - UNCUT, UNCENSORED & UNRATED FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN AMERICA!
Video vixen Tawny Kitaen made her movie debut as the virgin adventuress on a provocative odyssey to find her lost father. But even if she can endure the scorching torment of the desert and steamy hungers of the jungle, will she survive her final ordeal at the hands - and more - of the warrior women of Yik Yak?
Brent Huff and French sex kitten Zabou co-star in this erotic cult classic directed by Just Jaeckin (EMMANUELLE, THE STORY OF O), now fully restored from French vault materials and featuring scenes never-before-seen in America!
Amazon.com
So bad it's good, the notorious Gwendoline is one of those outrageously entertaining camp classics that will be enjoyed long after thousands of "better" movies have faded into obscurity. Loosely adapted from John Willie's pioneering 1940s comic strip "The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline," and directed with good-natured humor by French softcore specialist Just Jaekin (Emmanuelle, The Story of O), this delirious dose of mainstream erotica plays like a sexy parody of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. In his own audacious fashion, Jaekin was attempting an ambitious, good-looking adventure with above-average production values, but Gwendoline owes its "bad movie" cult status to its cheesy combination of globe-hopping scenery, tacky sets, hopelessly wretched dialogue, laughably awful acting, and a constant parade of beautiful women, either half-naked or scantily clad in outrageous S&M costumes. The film is also notorious for being the screen debut of Tawny Kitaen (shortly before she appeared with Tom Hanks Bachelor Party), who brings a breathtaking lack of talent (and a very hot body) to her title role as Gwendoline, a scrappy stowaway who arrives in China on a quest to find her missing father, who'd ventured into remote jungles in search of a rare and beautiful butterfly.
Joined by hunky mercenary Willard (Brent Huff) and her loopy friend Beth (played by French model/actress Zabou), Gwendoline survives a variety of absurdly amusing obstacles (including one very phony-looking alligator) until they eventually reach the land of the Yik Yak, an Amazonian slave-culture consisting entirely of slim, sexy women! Through it all, Jaekin's image of women is a source of constant fascination: When they're not kicking ass or running around topless, Kitaen and Zabou act like helpless, virginal airheads who need a man to survive, and Gwendoline plays out like an adolescent wet dream. With a climactic chariot chase that must be seen to be believed, it's all so ridiculous that you can't help but be entertained, and Jaekin's 106-minute, French-language director's cut contains several action scenes that were cut for the film's English-dubbed 88-minute American version, released (and available separately) as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
Jaekin's original cut has been spectacularly restored for this Severin Films DVD release, with both French and English audio tracks and a delightful commentary by Jaekin with journalist/author Tony Crawley and Frederick Levier, former contributor to Starfix, a French magazine devoted to fantastic films; their unabashed enthusiasm for the film makes this commentary an unexpected treat. Also included: a 24-minute video interview with Jaekin, in which he discusses the production history of Gwendoline; a 10-photo gallery of Tawny Kitaen from the French softcore magazine Lui; and a fascinating vintage audio interview with Sweet Gwendoline creator John Willie, from the archives of sex-research pioneer Dr. Alfred Kinsey. Kudos to Severin Films for including these high-quality bonus features with a film that many consider one of the "worst" of the 1980s! One caveat, however: Why not include the American cut Perils of Gwendoline on a second disc, instead of as a separate DVD release? --Jeff Shannon

All region bluray release from Severin 11/19! I pre-ordered bluray from Severin as soon as release was announced. Man, so glad I'm on the Severin mailing list!
The bluray:
Wow! The 4k scan is amazing! Eye-popping eye candy! It's like seeing the film for first time. Many extras ported from the Severin DVD - plus more! Additional commentaries and featurettes. Glad to see that Tawny Kitaen is on board for this edition! She participates in promos and there's a brand new (bluray only) second commentary track with her and costar Brett Huff. Excellent!
Tawny Kitaen and the director of the original Emmanuelle(74) and the Story of O brings a (relatively) high budget fetish-fest. Exotic locales, exotic women. Great production design and wardrobe(when the cast is clothed).
Based on John Willie's iconic fetishy comic serial. In fact, one of the extras is a vintage(audio) interview between Alfred Kinsey and John Willie - back in the day a fellas "bent" needed to be tagged and studied, I guess. (Of course, Kinsey was an odd duck himself...)
Well plotted, and often compared to a campy/fetishistic take-off of Indiana Jones. (Through it has much more in common with 1980s Flash Gordon).
Lots of iconic fetish scenarios, lovingly photographed -Indeed, the director is a former fashion photographer.
Despite the material, it is lighthearted and suitable for most adult sensibilities. Only a prude would consider this "dirty." It's a fun romp for all - no shortage of male skin, ladies. Also, despite the heavy S&M iconography, the "sadism" is presented as kinky fun.
Extras also include: director commentary, subtitles, widescreen and photo gallery from a frog skin mag; as well as the aforementioned Alfred Kinsey/John Willie interview. Also new to this bluray is a feature on the (exquisite) production/ costume design.
A must own!
DVD info: region one (or A) are as follows:
ASIN# B01M7X2U0G or B01I06H026, so double check! (I inadvertently bought a Euro, region B. on the first go-around.)

Except this leads to one of the most bizarre ending ever. A bondage paradise, complete with pony girls. More kink than you can shake a stick at. The last half hour is pure delirium, with all-girl chariot races. That includes the horses.
It's all too corny to take serious, the most winning factor. Too glossy and high production, with excellent direction from softcore maestro Just Jaeckin, beautiful girls and crazy situations.
If your tastes lean towards one-of-a-kind exploitation, this is a must. Never before nor after has anything this so... mainstream bondage been attempted before. The acting by Brett Huff and Zabou is pretty good. Lead Tawny Kitaen is slightly dazed and wooden, but it suits her 'innocent' persona. Definitely not for everyone, this one is opulent, camp and very well made. Only in Europe 1985 would something this oddball ever emerge.
Of Gwendoline In The Land Of The Yik Yak". However, this version has
all the semi-nude scenes intact. Including the picture perfect topless
Tawny Kitaen & 'French sex kitten' Zabou, in the rain. Also starring
Brent Huff as the 'I don't want to be a hero' hero of the story.
Produced by Jean-Claude Fleury. Directed by Just Jaeckin ( Emmanuelle &
The Story Of O [ Soft-porn, not my type ] ). DVD includes Tawny Kitaen
photo spread for French "LUI" Magazine. This is a must have for cult
movie fans, and will join my collection, between "Barbarella Queen Of
The Galaxy ( Jane fonda 1968 )" & "Teenage Catgirls In Heat (
Esmeralda Huffhines, Helen Griffiths, Dorothy Layne 1999 )".

This movie musn't be taken seriously, thats the point I don't think some people get when they watch it! It was never made as a 'serious' film, but simply as an enjoyable comic book. (it is based on a popular French comic strip 'The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline') The story resembles something akin to Raiders of the Lost Ark or Romancing the Stone, but with more nudity and some strange scenes of S&M when our heroes enter the fabled land of Yik-Yak. Even so despite the directors other movies (Emmanuel and The Story of 'O') its sexual aspects are not really that gratuitous. This movie is very silly, sexy and funny, for both the right and wrong reasons... Look out for the man eating Crocodile folks!
The cast are well suited to acting in this sort of movie. Tawny Kitain, in her first role, looks great and tries her best to get into the part of Gwendoline. Brent Huff (Who?) is the macho lead, a reluctant hero come Han Solo wannabe whose more brawn than brains... indeed Huff's lack of acting skill is perhaps a bonus for this role... But tops for me was French actress and model Zabou as Gwendoline's trusty maid/sidekick Beth, who on the one hand is a real zany and kookie sort of girl. but then on the other can be uber-sexy and worldly wise... Wait until you see her wearing a palace guard's g-string unifom :-)
The other cast members encountered in Yik-Yak are great fun, especially the OTT Queen and the sets are also pretty good in my opinion. Production values are quite high and apart from the obvious studio setting for the Hong Kong dock the jungles and deserts were actual locations in Morroco and Thailand which adds a nice exotic touch.
Gwendoline is a popular movie and if viewed in the right frame of mind its very enjoyable. Give it a go, you won't regret it and you'll find yourself a real guilty pleasure...
