From the School

Founded in 1878, Champlain College is a small, private college overlooking Lake Champlain in beautiful Burlington, Vermont. Nationally recognized for its world-class academics, career-focused majors, abundant opportunities for professional internships, and purposeful multidisciplinary studies, Champlain prepares students for an increasingly competitive marketplace and launches them on a path to a rich and rewarding life.

Champlain’s small size (2,100 undergraduates) and engaged community attract relentlessly inquisitive and open-minded individuals looking for an education that will empower them to make a real difference in the world.

The passion and commitment of the Champlain College community are reflected in the energy and enthusiasm that extends to every aspect of the student experience:

  • Students live in Victorian-era mansion residence halls or contemporary dorms with lake views.
  • They study and learn in state-of-the-art labs and Centers of Experience, which are built for innovation, collaboration, and experiential learning.
  • They're taught by faculty who bring outstanding academic credentials, industry expertise, and a wealth of connections to each and every class.
  • They enjoy small classes and faculty attention: Champlain’s student/faculty ratio is 12:1, and its average class size is 16. 100% of classes are taught by professional faculty, not graduate assistants.
  • When they're ready for a break, students can step outside and enjoy Champlain’s beautiful hilltop campus, which is situated right in the heart of Burlington, Vermont—the #1 College Town—according to Travel + Leisure and the Huffington Post.

Champlain provides students with the tools and opportunities they need to build a career doing what they love—as well as the critical skills they should acquire to meet life’s challenges with flexibility and strength. It’s an approach that works: over the last six years, 91% of Champlain’s graduates were employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation.
Champlain’s rigorous, career-focused learning model includes:

  • Professionally focused majors in high-growth career fields.
  • A unique Upside-Down Curriculum that allows students to dive into their major on day one and start learning the specific career-building skills that will give them a tremendous advantage when they enter the job market.
  • An innovative liberal arts Core curriculum that deliberately develops the critical thinking and leadership skills necessary to succeed in a fast-paced world.
  • A four-year InSight program that helps students gain skills in three areas essential to living an effective life: career positioning, personal finance, and well-being.
  • A commitment to experiential learning: 9 out of 10 students complete at least one internship or experiential learning opportunity and 60% complete multiple.

The great city of Burlington, Vermont, has it all: an impressive music scene, farm-to-table eateries, eclectic shops, and a downtown enlivened by 15,000 undergrads.

Between hiking, biking, paddleboarding, sailing, skiing, and other excursions, fascinating on-the-job adventures await. Home to community and environmentally minded Certified B Corps, such as Ben & Jerry’s and Burton, Burlington is an innovation hub with rapidly growing industries, artisanal producers, and plenty of internships and jobs.

Champlain maintains close ties with the local community, and its students are the interns of choice at businesses and nonprofit organizations in and around Vermont, including Burton Snowboards, Seventh Generation, Ben & Jerry's, Keurig Dr Pepper, KPMG, the Howard Center, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Champlain has satellite campuses in Montreal, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland, plus a mission and curriculum that encourage international study. More than 50% of Champlain students study abroad, and many also intern as part of their study-abroad experience.
