Keri Russell's scrappy performance negotiates the best possible terms for The Diplomat, a soapy take on statecraft that manages to make geopolitical crises highly bingeable entertainment.

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic For a show about geopolitical catastrophe, The Diplomat is surprisingly fun; it’s snappily structured to careen its way through kidnappings and catastrophic photo ops and refrigerator raids with bizarrely high stakes. Apr 26, 2023 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Time and again, it verges towards Love Actually with Wyler as Martine McCutcheon Apr 25, 2023 Full Review Joe Clay Times (UK) The verbal jousting between Kate and Hal, over global politics and their relationship, is superbly written, Sorkin-style. It’s almost more of a draw than the story itself... Apr 25, 2023 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof Its political thriller elements combined with just the right dose of character relationships are enough to keep our interest. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Mar 18, 2024 Full Review Jeanine T. Abraham VisAbleBlackwoman (Medium) Overall, The Diplomat is an adequate political drama. However, the slow-pace may not appeal to everyone. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 22, 2023 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Everything is Horrible (Substack) The Diplomat is great pulpy espionage fun, with Kate as a frazzled, determinedly inelegant female James Bond.... Pulpy espionage fun, though, doesn't have a lot to do with the actual workings of democracy. Jun 21, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

M E I didn't like when this show's dialogue veered into trying to mimic The West Wing, but when it stayed in its lane and did its own thing I thought it was excellent. It's got a short timeline so the tension holds and its really smartly written. Liked this show a lot! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Scooby D Great show. There were a couple moments where I was having to suspend disbelief a bit too much but still hoping for Season 2. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review toos v Truly loved this show's first season! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/24 Full Review Mrs. L I can imagine why some people would hate this show because its subject. Some see it showing US as weak and some bullying. It might hit the nerve too close to very different people. I loved it! It’s not about me or my country, so for me it’s easy to watch and much more simple to understand than West Wing. That fighting scene in the garden was brilliant! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Michelle D Exciting show! Lots of moving parts. Love it. Looking forward to the next season!
