Welcome from the Headteacher | Benfield School

Welcome from the Headteacher

As Headteacher of Benfield School, Newcastle it gives me great pleasure to welcome you.

Our School is a vibrant, diverse and welcoming community, which is not only an outstanding place to learn but also work.

At Benfield, we unashamedly focus on the educational outcomes of our students. We believe that this is the intrinsic purpose of running a successful school and we are exceedingly proud that we achieve this by taking a truly child centred approach. Our students are the most important people in our building.

Through our Co-Curricular Programme, we offer all students a wide array of opportunities to promote and develop additional skills by offering a wide variety of clubs, ranging from: competitive sports clubs to drama to the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award, cooking and many others. Our Co-Curricular Programme is further complemented by many trips and visits throughout the year linked to what students are learning in the classroom and further developing their cultural capital.

Ultimately, we are incredibly proud of our school and the opportunities we offer all students. Benfield is a diverse and exciting school in the heart of its community and I hope you enjoy exploring our website to see the fantastic learning that goes on within our doors.

Mr A Martin

Headteacher of Benfield School

Founded 1967

Benfield School in Newcastle was the first purpose build comprehensive school in the United Kingdom follow the reorganisation of education in England. The old North View County School was closed with all pupils transfering to the new school site on Benfield Road.

Benfield quickly built a reputation for sporting excellence not just within the city, but throughout the North East.

The Benfield Lion, the lion rampant of Scotland is still the symbol of the school today. The lion symbolises courage, and valour.

Our Vision

At Benfield, we instil in our students a belief that they have the potential to be successful. Simply believing that they can do it, is half the battle.

We see our job as providing the right guidance, environment and high quality learning to help make each student’s dreams come true.

We don’t see ourselves as an ‘education machine’. While high academic marks are certainly something to aim for, they are only part of what makes a happy, confident and successful student.

At Benfield School we aim to develop thoughtful, well rounded young people, who will make a positive contribution to society.

We do this by:

– Creating an inclusive, calm and caring learning environment offering a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum for all our students
– Ensuring all members of our school contribute to a safe and calm environment where the atmosphere reflects respect and dignity
– Encouraging students to develop into sensitive, tolerant and responsible individuals who make a positive contribution both within and beyond school
– Supporting our students to develop a sense of responsibility around their personal health and well-being
– Supporting our students to be happy, confident and motivated so they engage in their learning and the wide range of other activities on offer
– Ensuring our students thrive, experience success and are prepared for adult life
– Developing leadership skills that can be applied to all areas of life
Promoting Benfield values

Our Ethos
As a school in the heart of the community, with a number of NEAT feeder schools we can take a more personalised approach to the care and guidance we provide, we are committed to recruiting staff who are prepared to go the extra mile. We are recognised as being an exceptionally nurturing and caring school by Ofsted, other professionals, parents and visitors. Working closely with parents is a key priority for us and we aim to involve parents and carers at every opportunity. The happiness and wellbeing of our students is our number one priority. Each student has a care support team of Form Tutor & Head of Year, to whom they can turn at any time. We have other staff, with specific skills, to provide additional help and advice, as necessary.
