Recreating Auburn's 2013 playbook in NCAA '14 - a primer

Auburn's 2013 playbook got a lot of press this year because there really isn't anything like it. It uses the triple option, but it's not a triple option offense. It uses spread tactics, but is unlike most other spread teams. I did some quick research (because I'm bored at work) into recreating Auburn's playbook that was used in the 2013 season. Suffice to say, the one included with the game is nothing close to what was actually used - Auburn runs absolutely zero I-formation or single back sets, nor are we a traditional 'spread' team.

I'll include formations used and the basic principles of the Gus Malzahn playbook as seen in game film throughout the year. If you're used to pro-style, it will be a lot different. Option players should feel right at home.

Formations:

SHOTGUN

  • 4WR

  • 4WR TRIO

  • 4WR TRIO STR

  • NORMAL FLEX WING

  • NORMAL Y-SLOT

  • SLOT F WING

  • SPLIT

  • SPREAD

  • WING OFFSET

  • WING OFFSET WK

FULL HOUSE

  • NORMAL

PISTOL

  • 4WR TRIO

  • FULL HOUSE

  • SPREAD FLEX

  • STRONG

  • WEAK SLOT

  • Y-TRIPS

WILDCAT

  • NORMAL

  • FIGHT SONG (Gus actually invented this variation IIRC)

WINGBONE

  • SPLIT WING X

  • SPLIT WING Z

  • TWINS OVER

Basic Principles

  • The Malzahn playbook walks out in a 'Wing Offset' (or variation) about 50-60% of the time. This formation is used in hurry-up format to run the zone-read, jet sweep, and triple option.

  • Regardless of formation, there is ALWAYS a halfback on the field. Even in obvious passing situations. There are no 'empty' formations.

  • Auburn rarely lets the receivers get anywhere close to the line, even slot receivers. They are spread out as far as possible. No 'bunch' or 'tight' formations.

  • Auburn will often switch out a wide receiver for an athletic/tall tight end, especially in goal line situations.

  • Wildcat is rarely, if ever used, though this formation was used a lot in previous Malzahn offenses.

  • The fullback is used prominently to block but NEVER carries the ball. Sometimes used for a wheel route.

  • Auburn uses some formations that look similar to the 'Flex Bone' included with the game but as the Flexbone uses the FB in a halfback role, it's inconsistent with Auburn's playbook. Auburn's FB never runs the ball. Hence the inclusion of the 'Full House' formation which allows for FB/TE blocking and option schemes.

  • Motion is common and encouraged.

  • Audibles are generally used to change to a passing play out of a running play that has an unfavorable defensive matchup.

  • There are never two passing tight ends. One may be used for blocking in the backfield, but only one will be present on the line at all times.

  • Auburn runs the ball anywhere from 60-90% of the time, depending on defensive strengths.

  • Favorite running plays: any zone read, sweep triple option, inside zone runs, jet sweep, buck sweep, counter

  • Favorite passing plays: play action, WR screen, option passes, wheel routes, verticals, posts

Let me know if I missed anything. I've used it for a while (with a few tweaks) and it works well in '14 (and is fun to recruit for).

Thanks for this! I've always wanted to try a Malzahn offense in NCAA.

Really great stuff -- thanks!

WOW nice job. I can't wait to try this.

Is there any way to recreate the triple option pass Auburn used in games like Alabama this season? Example

I'm giving it a shot, but I'm having trouble with the number of plays allowed. I started adding complete forms with the shotgun and had to stop before adding the wildcat and wingbone. How did you get around this?

u/polydorr avatar

You'll have to customize. You won't be able to fit all the forms in their entirety. Priority-wise the Shotgun forms come first.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I went and took out some of the plays that I don't really use, like Triple Option Passes and whatnot. Thanks for compiling this.

Malzahn is the best, will be using this in NCAA 25

The only thing you missed is they love running power too

Ark St on NCAA 13 has his playbook. Its basically all the same thing as you posted here. Its probably much easier to run on NCAA 14 since the option runs got revamped.

Makes sense since Gus was at Arky state when this game was being made. I've never tried it.

Edit: just checked it out, it's a lot different from what I've outlined
