The Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship Program is a Federal Government Program administered by each University to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander regional and remote students from low socio-economic backgrounds, with costs associated with higher education. At CQUniversity, these scholarships are known as Dare to be Deadly Scholarships (D2BD).

A Dare to Be Deadly (D2BD) Scholarship will be awarded on the basis that the applicant meets the Indigenous Student Assistance Grants (Special Grants) Notifiable Instrument 2018.

To be eligible for a Dare to Be Deadly scholarship applicants should provide proof that they:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and provide Confirmation of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Identity or Cultural Reference documents as detailed under Supporting Documents below.
  • Preference is given to students from a remote or regional area.
  • Can demonstrate low personal/family income or are identified using Australian Bureau of Statistics as living in a low-socioeconomic area
  • Satisfactory completion of at least 50% of the units studied in the previous term of study.
  • Be enrolled or intending to enrol in a course of study in Term 2, 2024:
    • STEPS
    • Bachelor
    • Bachelor Honours
    • Associate Degree
    • Advanced Diploma (Higher Education)
    • Diploma (Higher Education)
    • Postgraduate (Coursework)
  • Be enrolled at Census date in Term 2, 2024

Students will be ineligible if they:

  • Are in receipt of a Centrelink Relocation Scholarship or Residential Costs Option,
    Centrelink Start-Up Scholarship or Loan.
  • Have received or are currently in receipt of a CQUniversity Scholarship within the
    current term.

Applicants will be assessed based on an application form and a written submission of no more than 500 words addressing the following:

“How will a Dare to Be Deadly Scholarship assist with your studies?”

As a scholarship recipient, you may be asked to participate in a feedback survey. You may also be approached to assist with promoting the CQUniversity Scholarships program by sharing your experiences as a recipient through media or invited to attend events such as Orientation or Open Day.

Declaration of receiving Centrelink Loans or Scholarships

Applicants who have received or are in receipt of the following must declare this at the time of application:

  • A Commonwealth Scholarship or Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship at another
    institution
  • Centrelink Student Start-Up Loan, Centrelink Relocation Scholarship or Residential
    Costs Option.

Failure to declare this may result in your scholarship being withdrawn and any paid monies being reclaimed.

Payment of scholarship 

Successful applicants are required to enter their current financial institution details (banking details) into their MyCQU (refer to instructions) for payment to occur. The value of the Dare to Be Deadly Scholarship will be paid in 2 instalments:

  • $500 paid in week 1 of term
  • $1000 paid by week 6 of term following post Census date eligibility checks

Payments will be credited electronically to the successful applicant's nominated bank account.

All requests for further information to support applications will be sent to the CQUniversity student email account. Failure to supply further information will deem the application incomplete and will not be considered.

To apply for a ISSP-Funded Scholarship: 

Complete a ISSP-Funded Scholarship Online Application Form, ensuring all supporting documentation is completed and attached as outlined here: 

  • For Current students (applicants who already have a Student ID number) apply through MyCQU. You will need to log in with your student details. Navigate to Support on the left panel, select Student Forms and Search ISSP-Funded Scholarships Application Form. 
  • For Future students (applicants who have applied or are intending to apply to study at CQUniversity but not yet received or accepted an offer) apply now. 

Complete applications must be received by 10 am AEST on the closing date. Please ensure all supporting documents are attached to the application as incomplete applications will not be considered. 

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via their student email accounts only. Decisions are final.
Commonwealth Government Indigenous Student Success Program

The Indigenous Student Success Scholarship Program (ISSP) is a Commonwealth funded program to help students take on the demands of university and succeed. Dare to be Deadly Scholarships are prioritised towards the support of Indigenous students who are financially disadvantaged and/or from remote and regional areas.
