Biography

Hon. Catherine (or Katherine) Greville was the eldest daughter[1] of Fulke Greville, 5th Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court, and his wife Sarah Dashwood.[2] Catherine is described as aged 38 when she died on 7 February 1703/04[1] which would place her birth at about 1665. Given her parents married on 12 January 1664/65,[2] Catherine was probably their eldest child born in late 1665 or early 1666.

Her first marriage in 30 December 1687 at Knowle Hall, Warwickshire, was to Wriothesley Baptist Noel, at that time Viscount Campden, only son and heir of Edward Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough and his first wife, Lady Elizabeth Wriothesley. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Gainsborough in 1689 but died 21 September 1690.[3]

They had two daughters and co-heirs;[3]

  1. Lady Elizabeth Noel, born circa 1688, married 9 June 1704, Henry Bentinck, 1st Duke of Portland;
  2. Lady Rachel Noel, born circa 1690, married February 1705/06, as his second wife, Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort.

She married secondly 12 March 1698/99 at St Clement Danes, Westminster, London, as his second wife, John Sheffield, at that stage, Marquess of Normanby, son of Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Earl of Mulgrave, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Cranfield.[4]

Her husband was created Duke of the County of Buckingham and of Normanby on 23 March 1702/03 and Katherine would have been known as the Duchess of those territories.[4]

She died on 7 February 1703/04,[4] aged 38,[1] without any further issue from her second marriage, and was buried in Westminster Abbey on 11 February that year.[4] "in the vault at the East end of King Henry VII's monument.[1]

John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham, married thirdly 16 March 1705/06, Lady Katherine Darnley, illegitimate daughter of James II, and Lady Katherine Sedley, and widow of James Annesley, Earl of Anglesey.[4]
