Being a third-year student at OSA, I can confidently say that the people at this school are very unique. Our school is an arts school, so it’s natural that its students group towards more of a creative and artistically expressive lifestyle. Academics are not the sole focus, even though it’s the majority of our curriculum, like all other schools. I appreciate the people here, especially the counselors, as they are super supportive and makes me feel welcome to ask for help. Preparing for college is not easy, and it’s most definitely stressful, but the counselors do everything in their power to make the process as smooth as possible. Changes I would like to see would be an increase in school funding. We barely have enough money to fund for dances, or activities outside of school hours. I wish to see our budget increase, so future students get to live through a more traditional high school experience.
Because my school is an art school, it is unique and different from other schools. My school has incredible art teachers. They are amazing at what they do, they have experience in their field and genuinely care about their students. The academics need some work. They find themselves short on subs a lot and the academic teachers are good overall but it's been difficult for them to find good math teachers for high school. I can't speak on middle school and their teachers because I only entered in high school. I think that my school used to be a lot more diverse and I hope that we move in that direction again because Oakland is honestly very gentrified and you can see this in our school. I hope that our school has more students of color in the future as it was a school made up of predominantly black students when it opened.
The best thing about the school is the inclusiveness we experienced in each program we participated. The teachers and counselors were always available to answer questions in person or by a quick email. They also kept us informed about community events or programs that could benefit our children. The main draw back of the school is that, being located in Oakland, the school has several break-ins and lost a lot of resources. However, the community came together and replaced what was lost. That shows how respected and cared about the school is in its community.
