The phrase was coined, when the team was down on its luck, with the intent of motivating the fans of the team to stick to their faith even in the hardest of times.

The phrase had appeared in books prior to becoming popularized by the 79ers fans.
However, it truly showed up in popular culture after May, 2013, when the manager of the team, Sam Hinkie made a statement, emphasizing process over outcome.
The phrase “trust the process” and “in Hinkie we trust” started showing up on Twitter after this.

On August 21, 2017, rapper Ace Hood published an album titled “Trust the Process” further popularizing the expression.
As of March 7th, 2021, the phrase may be encountered from a self-help course to a meditation class as well as a sports bar.
