Washington, DC: The entire world watched with bated breathe as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took oath as the President and Vice President of the United States. Biden became the 46th President of the US as the 4-year term of his opponent Donald Trump came to an end. 

Biden said, "I will be the president for all Americans", as he swore the oath next to his wife Jill Biden. Biden, the former vice president took the oath at the same site where Trump supporters clashed with cops at Capitol Hill and stormed the Congress. 

After taking the oath, Biden addressed the country and said, "Today, we celebrate triumph not of a candidate but of a cause, the cause of democracy. People & will of the people have been heard. We have learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile & at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed." Here are 9 interesting highlights of the historic ceremony- 

  1. Pop singer Lady Gaga performed the US National Anthem at the inauguration ceremony. This was not all, country music singer Garth Brooks performed 'Amazing Grace'. 
  2. While outgoing Vice President Mike Pence attended the ceremony, Donald Trump and his family skipped the event. 
  3. Joe Biden prayed for the lives lost to COVID-19 as the death toll in the US reached 4 lakh. 
  4. Biden took oath on his 127-year-old family Bible, which was held by his wife, Jill Biden. 
  5. Biden thanked his wife Jill for supporting him throughout his journey and Harris attributed her success to all the women in her life. 
  6. Harris was sworn in by Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice in the history of the US. 
  7. Harris wore the colour purple to show her respect to  Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to run for president back in 1972.
