Johnny Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is a hugely popular American pop, soul and jazz singer from Texas in the United States.
Mathis was encouraged to play piano and sing by his father at an early age growing up in San Francisco, California, U.S. The singer would dance and sing for visitors in his home and at church functions, before taking extensive vocal lessons by Connie Cox, including classical and operatic singing.
Mathis has spoken of Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine and Lena Horne as huge influences to his musical approach, and can be heard in his earlier material when producer George Avakian singed the singer to Columbia Records. Mathis’ sound was altered by the label after the comparative flop of his self-titled debut album in 1956, from then on the singer concentrated on lush and swooning pop balladry. Mathis infused various other genres into his sound over the years from soft-rock in the 70s to jazz, soul music and even disco inspired 1979 album “Mathis Magic”.
The singer found fame and commercial success in the era just prior to the rock-driven ‘60s of Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, the last of a breed of popular music stars to appeal to a contemporary adult audience. Mathis made it big in the album market to which he has contributed over 80 albums since his debut, 73 of which have made the Billboard 200, some of his most popular albums include “Heavenly” in 1959, “You Light Up My Life” in 1978 and a number of Christmas albums. Some of Mathis’ most popular singles include the chart topping “Chances Are” and “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” as well as 1962’s “Gina”.
Due to the singer’s consistent album success Mathis is the third most successful recording artist of the 20th century having sold over 350 million records worldwide.
Read moreJohnny Mathis is a great American singer. He has had huge success. He has been singing for years and continues to do so. He is extremely talented. His voice is one of a kind. His voice is absolutely beautiful.

He is simply one of the best to ever get on the microphone. He started performing in the 1950s. He has had many hits other the years. Some of his hits include “It’s Not For Me To Say”, “The Twelfth of Never”, “Wild is the Wind”, “A Certain Smile”, “Maria”, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”, “Take Good Care of Her”, and “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. Mathis has had made timeless and classic music. He is a wonderful performer.
He is still going strong. It is lovely to hear him perform. His concerts are fantastic. No matter what your age, you will appreciate his performances. He still gives it his all. He loves performing and the audience love listening to him. He is a legend who is still on the top of his game.
A singer/songwriter who has sold over 100 million albums is without a doubt a legend in his own right. Johnny Mathis can hold claim to this impressive feat and despite being almost 80 years old, the Texan musician continues to tour globally with a very loyal live band who know his music almost as well as the man himself.
His rich, dulcet tones have soundtracked generations and his music has been passed down so there is a great range of fans gathered here this evening. A discography that includes genres including jazz, traditional pop and even latino it is pretty difficult to create a succinct setlist yet Mathis achieves it. He goes for an almost big band sound as his vast array of percussion adds a fantastic new layer to the classic music such as 'Stranger in Paradise' and 'You Make Me Feel Brand New'. There is clear emotional weight when Johnny delivers some of his own favourites songs and it has even more emotional meaning to a number of audience members. The huge standing ovation given at the end of 'Black Orpheus' is credit to such a successful artist.
