"The Comeback Special Of 1968" exceeded all expectations showing Elvis not only retained artistic brilliance from the beginning but had clearly gone on to the next level, that mid-fifties explosion joyfully happened all over again. Performing with total confidence looking every inch the iconic Superstar sounding better than ever, Elvis moved with total swagger that was commanding singing soulfully with artistic brilliance and vocal beauty that was simply stunning to experience...looking dashing handsome in black leather with intimate in-studio mesmerized live audience, it was clear Elvis superstar magic illuminated stronger than ever, grand finale captivating with Elvis passionate "If I Can Dream" stellar performance in a white suit one of the most memorable moments ever in television history, next this compelling soulful anthem became a widely heralded chart-topper, now with complete jubilation Elvis "The King" was back on top where he remained to the end.
Elvis next clearly had a desire to follow this spectacular triumpth in to the recording studio, going to Memphis first time since legendary fifties Sun Records sessions to record with legendary master Chips Moman at the helm...gone were those past stifling restrictions of recording songs available only through his compensated publishing company, Elvis insisted on opening the musical floodgates wanting to record any and all great songs available from different areas of the music world, as a result Elvis created some of the finest recordings in his all too short of a career...legendary sessions almost came to a halt when demands were made of producer behind Elvis back for more compensation from outside publishing companies, thankfully conversation overheard by RCA executive put sessions back on track without further incident, thankfully clearing the way to create a total magical musical masterpiece catapulting Elvis back on top where he belonged! Massive hits came from these phenomenal Memphis Sessions, uniquely brilliant gems as "In The Ghetto" were stunning to hear over the airwaves, Elvis once again clearly hit the heights reclaiming his position as King Of Rock & Roll...hits continued with "Suspicious Minds" a joy to experience over and over, once again Elvis dominated the airwaves with "Kentucky Rain" another exquisite gem...complete beauty and deeply felt soulfulness of these classic songs took Elvis to greater heights in his already accomplished career, ultimately these banner sessions created a timeless masterpiece that is joyful to experience over and over.
"Elvis In Memphis" entering the digital age is an interesting journey, eighties "Elvis - The Memphis Record" an engrossing twenty-three track collection essential for any Elvis fan or true music lover in general...playing the great release over and over through the years had the feeling by now must exist a release of these great sessions with superior audio, "From Elvis In Memphis" Legacy Edition is that collection being beautifully remastered two-disc sumptuous collection, ultimately the definitive issue of an important timeless musical masterpiece! Elvis throughout tremendeous Memphis Sessions clearly at a creative peak emotionally and artistically, glorious performances with stellar clearly inspired musicians in a varied collection running the gamut from Percy Mayfield classic to Lennon/McCartney then everything in between, "The King" in command and lean & natural arrangements never get in the way of the star attraction, Elvis so natural and relaxed throughout making one only wish it all would have gone on and on...magic contained throughout "From Elvis In Memphis" make this stellar release a "must-have" essential collection for anyone who ever enjoyed a single moment from the greatest singer/performer from the Twentieth Century and beyond...forever love and miss you Elvis, RIP great one.
On first listen I wasn't too sure. The songs are difficult to categorize. They are not quite country, not quite blues, or rock, but have a little of all of them. And, to be honest, the engineering isn't the greatest, with the instruments a little too loud compared to his voice on some tracks, but it sounds like much of it was done live studio, which might also account for it.
But on the second listen through, I was hooked. And listened to them non-stop on my drive to and from work for days. These are great renditions of some songs I had never heard before and Elvis does a fantastic job with them, as well as covers of others. You also hear a little of the bigger sound that he was going for in his stage shows, which became a signature in his final years, so the recordings serve as a bridge between that and his hollywood soundtrack days. The songs definitely have a personality to them that is late sixties early seventies, but do not feel at all dated.
If you are a fan this is something you have to have in your collection, and I think even people who are not big fans of Elvis will appreciate the mixture of country and blues that are scattered throughout.
If you've got an Elvis fan in the family you just found the perfect Christmas or birthday gift.
The sound quality is great.
I can’t find Elvis cds in my country anymore.
Elvis at this period (1968-1972) is at his peak (according to me).
