- Fiona BMelbourne, Australia170 contributionsSurprisingLots of place to stop and take a rest and take in the location or people watch. Interesting beach/ pool area in the hear of the city. Also a rain forest walk and a Nepalese temple that was donated during Expo 88. Stoll along the Brisbane river, grab a meal or an ice-cream and lots of the restaurants in the areaVisited June 2023Written 25 June 2023
- SarahH70Manchester, United Kingdom238 contributionsLovely Beach and fabulous shops and restaurantsWe spent our last afternoon in Brisbane on South Bank. We rode the big wheel and spent time on the beach enjoying the sunshine. There are a great selection of shops bars and restaurants in the area and a lovely walk along the riverfront from the beach to the main bridge near the theatre.Visited April 2023Written 5 July 2023
- AnnenbergAuckland, New Zealand89 contributionsGardens and walking paths beautifulThe South Bank Parklands are beautiful. I highly recommend a visit for walking, swimming or relaxing. During the Day it's great, however the South Bank restaurant area is not very vibrant, something negative is going on here, compared to other parts of central Brisbane.Visited July 2023Written 20 July 2023

- LSQRD1Kent, Ohio798 contributionsWorld class riverside areaThis is such a fantastic riverside area! We enjoyed walking along and seeing all the plants. There is a neat natural pool, a food garden, tropical forest, places to eat, etc. We often go to waterside areas along a similar vein to this one around the world and this one is amazing. Truely unique and very well done!Visited June 2023Written 16 August 2023
- Lenny HAuckland, New Zealand772 contributionsGo and see itEither just go for a walk or enjoy one or more of the activities on offer. Many buskers put on a great performance. There are plenty of places to stop for a drink or a meal. Pretty garden areas offer different sights and places to enjoy.Visited June 2023Written 22 August 2023
- Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland10,878 contributionsLovely Part of the CityWe spent quite a bit of time in or near Southbank while staying in Brisbane. The fanzone was there for the Women's World Cyp so there was a bit of a buzz anyway. Even without that, it's a lovely area, nice greery, the riverfront views and lots of good bars and restaurants all along. It's dominated by the bug ferris wheel, so you can miss it. Loads of museums and galleries run alongside too, and it's a stop on the metro.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 22 September 2023

This area is over 30 years old but it is truly a beautiful place filled with so many places to visit from vegetarian gardens, a beach and pools, bars and cafes, stunning gardens, markets, cultural and exhibition centres and walkways. Takes about 20 minutes to walk the length but you'll be stopping so frequently so you could easily spend hours here. It's clean, peaceful and amazing to visit right in the heart of the city.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 November 2023

If you're in high-rise accommodation as were there's great views across the river to the CBD. Also some interesting buildings and good cafes around Fish Lane. And of course the area is very central; easy to get to Paddington and the West End as well as downtown.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 December 2023

I have been spending time at Southbank for more years than I care to recall and love the place. It has been a thing for me to drop off my wife at an event somewhere in the City and then go for a wander through Southbank (almost always with our dogs) for many, many years. I love the relaxed nature of the place and feel that it mirrors the lifestyle in Qld quite well. Chilled, unpretentious and suitable for whatever folks want to do whether it be riding a bike, reading a book, jogging, playing with kids, strolling, having a swim or a BBQ.
Did I mention that puppies on leads are welcome ?
Plenty of food outlets, transport options and hidden delights like the sensory garden and the little boardwalks.....
Not to mention the easy access across and along both sides of the river for many kms.
A wonderful way to spend as little or as long as you like.

Lovely park, extremely clean.
Even first thing on New Year’s Day there wasn’t a speck of rubbish to be found.
Wheel of brisbane was great too. No shortage of food/dining in the area

My family and I attended EXPO 1988, it was a wonderful experience and I am glad to say, the Gov. have kept the same atmosphere along the South Bank with entertainment, swimming areas, restaurants and established tropical green gardens and beautiful shaded walks.

Hi, I'm curious... are cats allowed at the parkland playgrounds? (And on the Equipment)
Considering they are leashed, kept away from fountains & showers as well as picked up after?

Sorry do not know, did not see any cats on or off leash while there.

How far is airport from this area ? Can you take a morning flight from here ?
roslyn_fry
Perth, Australia109 contributions
Yes aprox 30 mins depending on time of day. Using both tunnels costing $10 reduces travel time to here from airport and then back. Then allow the time to walk around too

Hi Courtney. The main beach area is lit enough that you can see around when you are in the water.

Can you erect sun shelters at the parklands beach?
GregSelf
Brisbane, Australia54 contributions
The official answer is "No" for the sand and possibly the whole parkland. You could be fined and/or asked to leave, though I can't see how they could stop you coming back to another area. If you Google images of the beach and the parkland as a whole, you will not see any temporary shelters or umbrellas. There are some areas of sand under trees and lots of sunny and shaded areas on the grass close by.

Hi, are there lockers near the man made beach and swimming pools? I only ask as I’ll be travelling alone when I visit.

Hi! This is what I read about our Southbank:
Locker Hire
Lockers are available for temporary hire in Stanley Street Plaza, near Streets Beach. Hire fees are $4 for three hours and $8 for six hours. Please note that these lockers are for short term use only. Overnight storage is not permitted.
Hope this will help.

Very accessible, Ramps down to the market area and pool, and lifts up from the car park and up the the second story pubs and restaurants. The rest is all gently sloping paths. But it does get crowded

Rydges would be ideal. Get a room overlooking the river & the Southbank parklands. Enjoy your stay!!
