Global shifts in employment structure: A new geography of jobs?

9 November 2022

Episode 24

Over more than a decade, a series of economic crises have led to major shifts in the labour markets – creating new types of jobs and destroying existing ones. Researchers are examining the extent of these changes in employment structures, ranging from the decline in mid-paid jobs to the upgrading in high-paid, high-skilled jobs. How are these changes affecting different regions or economies? And which emerging sectors show the most promise for achieving employment growth in developed economies, as well as sustainable development, employment creation and poverty alleviation in less developed economies? In this episode, Sergio Torrejón Perez, economic and policy analyst in the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and coordinator of the joint EU funded ILO-JRC project “Building partnerships on the future of work ”, and John Hurley, Senior Research Manager, Employment Unit, Eurofound, discuss these trends, and their impact on the future of work.

The future of work podcast series was created on behalf of the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
