Futuristic view of life in Pankow, East Berlin. The GDR has turned into a madhouse with serious economic problems.
I have repeatedly rewatched it, and it's easy to explain why: all due to the captivating yet repulsive pseudo-GDR. In truth, Udo Kier serves as an exceptional marketing ploy to captivate the audience, albeit his portrayal is truly divine. Let's revisit the GDR. In my viewpoint, films portraying the East Side from the perspective of West Berliners or Hungarians (like in this case) tend to be crude and insensitive imitations. Does the concept of an "East German miracle" seem ridiculous to you? Additionally, there are other propaganda tools such as the "red threat" and s bunch of metagags for a petty hater armed with a Wikipedia link starter pack, amongst other things. As someone who has loved the GDR for…
Anthology Film Archives - Udo Kier retrospective
Socialist Musicologist/Casio SK1 Switched-on Bach Composer Johann Wolfgang Amadeus Zart is locked up in mental hospital by fellow socialists for pushing a drunken comrade & killing him in this grim dystopia future of 1995 Berlin where the wall never came down & both sides spiraled into mirrored versions of the same governmental nightmare. Then, once he starts rambling about the 15 year cycle of paradigm shifts, musically & otherwise, and how they keep causing a disconnect between parents & offspring politically, he’s done for. If you can’t pick a side in 1995 because you think both teams are problematic, you get shock therapy.
Tortured & tormented by cruel cruel comrades for exposing a fallacy in both political movements,…
Watched at NWFF Seattle. Staff introduced that it's the first ever US screening after the 4k restoration, second ever screening after one back in 1983 at Anthology Film Archives NYC. Praise the Goethe Institute Seattle.
I am glad that I didn't refrain from checking it out after seeing only negative reviews here. Quite distinctive 80s, colorful, Kraftwerk vibe, accompanied with the estrangement aesthetic seen from some of the new German cinema at the time. Engaging (and not-too-complicated though also not terribly coherent) story played often for comedic effects with wild cuts and editing. The nurse in the film is Magdalena Montezuma and she looks exactly the same as her role(s) in Freak Orlando.
a good way to start the year with new obscure udo kier movie..... especially with my zero understanding of german haha 😅👌❤
Like a Star Trek Next Gen episode if it were filmed during the Original Series era.
Aliens, Sci-fi, with a bit of Richard O'Brien's 'Shock Treatment' thrown in.
- Falk Straub
