Yard Waste and Leaf Pickup

ANNOUNCEMENT:

2024 SPRING LEAF COLLECTION:

Starting Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 19, 2024. Valparaiso City Services will begin the spring curbside leaf pick-ups. The City has four leaf collection zones and crews will rotate zones continuously.

Progress updates will be provided to residents, so they have a better idea of when to expect leaf collection in their own neighborhoods. Some areas of the city take longer due to more trees and the weather can also affect the collection efforts. To sign up for text and/or email progress alerts, visit https://www.ci.valparaiso.in.us/list.aspx.

Please bag leaves in biodegradable bags after April 19th. Bags will be picked up by brush trucks.

Reminder: Grass clippings can be bagged in biodegradable bags and taken to the compost site, or for curbside service, please place bagged grass clippings in the trash tote.

OFF-SEASON BRUSH AND YARD WASTE OPERATIONS

During January, February and March, there is a decrease in demand for curbside brush and yard waste pickup services. Due to this decrease in demand, Valparaiso City Services will provide curbside brush and yard waste services by appointment only during the off-season. Customers may contact Customer Service and request a pickup, and this will be completed in 5 business days.

The City of Valparaiso provides curbside collection of residential leaves, brush, and yard waste. This separate collection diverts biodegradable material from the landfill, reducing landfill costs and ultimately providing beneficial organic garden material. The brush and yard waste is processed at the Valparaiso Compost Site for mulch and compost that is made available to residents, while supplies last.

The Valparaiso Compost Site is located at 2150 West Lincolnway in Valparaiso, IN.

Brush and Yard Waste Guidelines:

  • Residential (no contractor/landscaper-generated) brush and yard waste, including limbs, brush, bushes, roots, leaves, etc. are accepted.
  • No milled lumber, lattice, vinyl edging, landscape timbers or railroad ties.
  • Place at curb or alley in biodegradable paper bags or piles.
  • During heavy seasons (spring, after storms, leaf season, etc.) it can take extra time for us to provide the curbside collections throughout the entire City. We appreciate your patience during these times.
  • Residents also have the option to drop off brush and yard waste at the Compost Site.
  • Large amounts of brush such as logs and branches will be picked up by a grapple truck. Place items in area with no obstacles or overhead wires. Contact Public Works if you have items requiring the grapple truck.

Leaf Pickup Information

  •  Leaves should be the only thing in the pile – no sticks, bricks, boards, or other items.
  •  Loose leaves will only be picked up curbside during the designated Leaf Vacuum Season. Start dates will be released to the public weeks prior to the beginning of vacuum pickup. End dates are dependent on many variables and will be set as the season comes to an end.
  •  If you wish to bag your leaves, please use biodegradable paper bags and place them curbside for pickup. Residents may also take bagged leaves to the Compost Site.
  •  We do not service alleys for leaf pick-up with the vacuums. If you wish to have leaves picked up in an alley, we ask that they are bagged in biodegradable bags, and will be collected by separate trucks.
