Scotland lock Richie Gray injured his biceps during the Six Nations opener against Wales and could miss the rest of the championship.

Back-rower Luke Crosbie also came off injured in Cardiff, but head coach Gregor Townsend hopes he could recover in time for next weekend's clash with France.

"Richie knew straight away, as did the medics, it was a biceps injury," Townsend said. "That doesn't look good for this championship.

"Luke's was a shoulder injury and I think it is a painful one now but it might settle for next week. Let's hope there's not significant damage there.

"It's a blow to lose two starting players from our team. Obviously someone like Richie is very experienced player for us and Luke has been outstanding this season and took the game to Wales.

"We will just have to adapt, we have Grant Gilchrist coming back from suspension and there's a lot of competition in the back row. I'm sure guys will be able to step up next week."
