there was a lot to this movie and although some things were a bit cheese and predictable others were not. there were enough plot twists in this that i thought it was a step above. no idea why this is hated on so badly. that sad, due to some of the twists i have some questions becaues i definitely missed something. that is, if in fact it can be fully understood. what follows below has spoilers: scroll down if you want.
1. what the heck was marius. thats the big one. anyone know what he actually was? underworld girl asks the same question. when they were doing all the flashbacks or bloodbacks or whatever you want to call them, we see michael being caught, then i got the feeling that maybe marius was michael. then he pulls out the last of michaels blood and apparently he just killed michael? dang i completely forgot the 4th underworld. heck, maybe i didnt even see it and only saw the previews? need to go back.
2. so was the young ice princess girl her daughter grown up? seemed like it but wasnt sure.
3. dang, cant remember all the stuff with amelia, need to go back and watch those again.
A militant, brutal ground pounding installment of the “Underworld” saga, with matrix style fighting, resulting in plenty of blood, carnage and gore. This movie is fashionably astounding with all its modern Gothic style grandeur and opulence demonstrated by its famed vampire’s vs werewolf storyline. The sets, props, make up, and entire wardrobe line-up for the old world era sets are fabulous, including all special effects. The cinematography is absolutely stunning and well done. Pitch perfect CG special effects. This movie is well written and wraps-up all lose ends, and setting things up for yet another sequel. There are (no) dry or boring areas in this movie, it goes from (0-60) right from the start. This movie is worthy of lots of Awards.
*Warning for families, parents or those with kids. I hate it when a good movie like this has an unnecessary sex act demonstrated. However, (there is a scene where oral sex is performed). To avoid embarrassment, you may not want to let little kids view this movie.
The Facts:
1. Running Time Approx. 1 hr. 30 min.
2. Sound 5.1 DTS-HD
3. Has beautiful cinematography and gothic style modern fashion…impressive!
4. This movie is dark, so hope you have a newer TV with excellent light/dark contrast.
5. This movie has heavy action all the way through.
6. There are no dry or boring areas.
7. The movie is intense and brutal, with lots of blood, gore and carnage.
8. Contains (1) inappropriate sex act not suitable for viewing by kids.
Thank you!

We open with a recap of “Awakenings” as Selene (Beckinsale) rides away from her pursuers while tearing up the street via motorcycle. Her voice over narrative shows her nursing a broken heart from the “loss” of her daughter Eve. Her attitude is presently fatalistic bordering on nihilistic. The opening sequence features her getting attacked and seemingly overcome by Lycans...but this is the queen of “Death Dealers” so even in a sorrowful state, her instincts kick in and short work of her enemies is made. David (Theo James) adds an assist though she really didn’t need his help. Still in her debt after her essentially resurrecting him in “Awakenings”, he is unquestionably loyal and offers to give her shelter from her enemies as well as support to find and protect her daughter. This covers the first 10 minutes and the pace is maintained effortlessly to the end afterward.
Selene’s enemy list includes her own people who want her tried for killing two elders of her kind, Marius and Viktor. The Lycans seek her out to discover her daughter’s location as Eve’s hybrid blood is key to their supremacy as they strive to obtain a final victory over the vampire clans. Much of this is old hat with the exception of a few key reveals. The action sequences however continue to slay, especially in a cage fighting sequence in which Selene later trains new death dealer recruits via an impromptu match with Semira’s (Lara Pulver) second, Varga (Bradley James). While the never ending battle between warring clans has reached its pinnacle, the visuals particularly during combat sequences are still top tier up to and including a two grand end battles between Selene and Marius (Tobias Menzies), as well as a key fight between David and Semira.
The political intrigue in this run proves as interesting as the actual fighting. Pulver delivers a cerebral, sensual portrayal of Semira, the elder who would be queen. Her reaching out to David’s father, Thomas (Charles Dance), for support for the idea of bringing back Selene to the Eastern coven, moves the plot along briskly. Betrayals abound and are not unexpected. The true villain being female, in my opinion, is a good touch as while Pulver has charisma to spare, Menzies does not. He looks stern and demonstrates anger on several occasions but as a big bad, he fails epically. Were it not for the CGI sequences which hasten the reveal as to his power’s source...and nicely tie up a dangling plot line for 3 movies, he is mostly forgettable. Semira’s second, Varga (James), comes off well, nicely exhibiting a quiet anger and a penchant for violence and treachery. His true goal and loyalty play well in later sequences.
Women get a good push in this film and why shouldn’t they as it is a female led franchise? We meet the northern clan featuring Lena (Clementine Nicholson) whose appearance mirrors more that of Vikings than the standard over used blue that permeates the film from stem to stern. Her skill in battle is mirrored by her mysticism which sets Selene on another path and yields even more cool visuals.
The end sequence battles deliver with a very evenly matched David, now more motivated with the recent knowledge of his true heritage, and the reinvigorated Semira now ‘boosted’ by Selene’s blood. The fight is top notch up to its conclusion, even featuring a feint involving sunlight. Selene’s battle with Marius is gritty and brutal with her unexpected action providing both a gory segment and decisive resolution. The strategy exhibited by the Lycans regarding blowing out the walls of the castle fortress proved a devastating game changer and again provided some strong key effects.
Overall, this film could very easily tie things up as a new order is set up and characters come full circle. The need to be on the run as an outcast is eliminated so the need for another run seems unnecessary. I say this with the knowledge that Len Wiseman has already slated a sixth installment shooting imminently. I will unquestionably be seeing said installment as honestly, these films are escapist, bloody fun. “Underworld – Blood Wars” does not redefine the genre, but it did provide a solid 90 minutes of popcorn fueled action and mayhem. Much of the key to this franchise’s success is Kate Beckinsale to whom this series must feel like a comfy coat or sweater as she clearly is at ease with the role for the franchise she built and obviously still enjoys revisiting. Blood Wars is not outstanding but it is well worth your time.
Daran ist also nichts auszusetzen.
Muss man mögen.
