"Liberals have been wrong about everything in the last half century," writes conservative pundit Ann Coulter, author of the bestselling anti-Clinton tome High Crimes and Misdemeanors. They've been especially wrong about Republicans, she writes. The bulk of Slander, in fact, is a well-documented brief dedicated to the proposition that most of the media despises anybody whose political opinions lie an inch to the right of the New York Times editorial page. This is hardly an original observation, though few have presented it with such verve. Coulter is the shock-jock of right-wing political commentary, able to dash off page after page of over-the-top but hilarious one-liners: "Liberals dispute slight reductions in the marginal tax rates as if they are trying to prevent Charles Manson from slaughtering baby seals." There's a certain amount of irony about an author who says "liberals prefer invective to engagement" also declaring, "The good part of being a Democrat is that you can commit crimes, sell out your base, bomb foreigners, and rape women, and the Democratic faithful will still think you're the greatest." But then carefully measured criticism never has been Coulter's shtick--or her appeal. Fans of Rush Limbaugh and admirers of Bernard Goldberg's Bias won't want to miss Slander. --John Miller

For those who don't know Ann Coulter, she is one of those blond, right-wing, talking heads who pop up on cable--the most outspoken one. "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity," she remarked after the terrorist attacks. She is no easier on liberals, on whom she blames, well, just about everything: "The liberal catechism includes a hatred of Christians, guns, the profit motive and political speech." Page after page of invective follows: "In radical Islam liberals finally found a religion they could respect." The diatribe (complete with footnotes when she's quoting liberals) continues through discussions of the liberal press, the "apocryphal" religious right, and liberals' inability to engage in ideas, only name-calling(!). Sometimes she makes a valid point. She's exactly right about the way the media criticizes women because of their looks. She neglects to mention, though, that this criticism is not restricted to Republican women such as Linda Tripp. Just ask Hillary Clinton. Coulter tries very hard to be incendiary, but she comes across as merely tedious. Liberals Unhinged

The natives are superficially agreeable, but they go in for cannibalism, headhunting, infanticide, incest, avoidance and joking relationships, and biting lice in half with their teeth. —Margaret Mead

Political "debate" in this country is insufferable. Whether conducted in Congress, on the political talk shows, or played out at dinners and cocktail parties, politics is a nasty sport. At the risk of giving away the ending: It's all liberals' fault.

As there is less to dispute, liberals have become more bitter and angry. The Soviet threat has been vaporized, women are not prevented from doing even things they should be, and the gravest danger facing most black Americans today is the risk of being patronized to death.

And yet still, somehow, Tom DeLay (Republican congressman from Texas) poses a monumental threat to democracy as we know it. The left expresses disagreement with DeLay's governing philosophy by calling him "the Meanest Man in Congress," "Dangerous," "the Hammer," "the Exterminator," and the "Torquemada of Texas." For his evident belief in a Higher Being, DeLay is compared to savage murderers and genocidal lunatics on the pages of the New York Times. ("History teaches that when religion is injected into politics-the Crusades, Henry VIII, Salem, Father Coughlin, Hitler, Kosovo-disaster follows.")

Liberals dispute slight reductions in the marginal tax rates as if they are trying to prevent Charles Manson from slaughtering baby seals. Progress cannot be made on serious issues because one side is making arguments and the other side is throwing eggs-both figuratively and literally. Prevarication and denigration are the hallmarks of liberal argument. Logic is not their metier. Blind religious faith is.

The liberal catechism includes a hatred of Christians, guns, the profit motive, and political speech and an infatuation with abortion, the environment, and race discrimination (or in the favored parlance of liberals, "affirmative action"). Heresy on any of these subjects is, well, heresy. The most crazed religious fanatic argues in more calm and reasoned tones than liberals responding to statistics on concealed-carry permits.

Perhaps if conservatives had had total control over every major means of news dissemination for a quarter century, they would have forgotten how to debate, too, and would just call liberals stupid and mean. But that's an alternative universe. In this universe, the public square is wall-to-wall liberal propaganda.

Americans wake up in the morning to "America's Sweetheart," the Today show's Katie Couric, berating Arlen Specter about Anita Hill ten years after the hearings. Or haranguing Charlton Heston on the need for gun control to stop school shootings. Her co-host, Matt Lauer, wonders casually why the federal government has not passed a law on national vacation time. The New York Times breathlessly announces "Communism Still Looms as Evil to Miami Cubans" and Time magazine columnist Barbara Ehrenreich gives two thumbs up to "The Communist Manifesto" ("100 million massacred!").

We read letters to the editor of the New York Times from pathetic little parakeet males and grim, quivering, angry women on the Upper West Side of Manhattan hoping to be chosen as that day's purveyor of hate. These letters are about one step above Tiger Beat magazine in intellectual engagement. They are never responsive, they never include clever ripostes or attacks; they merely restate the position of the Times with greater venom: I was reminded by your editorial that Bush wasn't even your average politically aware Yalie; he was too busy branding freshmen at his fraternity house.

In the evening, CBS anchor Dan Rather can be found falsely accusing Republicans of all manner of malfeasance or remarking that a president who has been impeached, disbarred, and held in contempt for his lies is an "honest man." Diane Sawyer pronounces that "the American people" are yawning at the news that the president was engaging in sodomy with a cigar and oral-anal sex with a White House intern.

Hollywood movies preach about kind-hearted abortionists, Nazi priests, rich preppie Republican bigots, and the dark night of fascism under Senator Joe McCarthy. Hollywood starlets giddily announce on late-night TV how much they'd like to give Bill Clinton a "certain type of sex" (as Paula Jones called it).

And then Americans wake up for another day of left-wing schlock, beginning their day with the CBS Early Show's Bryant Gumbel somberly asking smut peddler Hugh Hefner for his views on a presidential campaign.

We read national magazines that pretend to be reasonable while seething with the impotent violence of women. We wade through preposterous news stories on Enron, global warming, Tawana Brawley, "plastic guns," the melting North Pole, the meaning of the word "is"—until you can't keep up with the wave of lies. It's like being in an earthquake listening to all the gibberish.

When arguments are premised on lies, there is no foundation for debate. You end up conceding to half the lies simply to focus on the lies of Holocaust-denial proportions. Kind and well-meaning people find themselves afraid to talk about politics. Any sentient person has to be concerned that he might innocently make an argument or employ a turn of phrase that will be discerned by the liberal cult as a "code word" evincing a genocidal tendency. The only safe course is to be consciously, stultifyingly boring.

It isn't just public figures who have to be worried-though having millions of people listening to their spontaneous on-air remarks obviously raises the stakes a bit. But even a private conversation can be resurrected a decade later. Just a few years ago, a killer walked largely because a detective involved in the case had used the "N-word" almost ten years earlier. In a conversation with his then-girlfriend, Mark Fuhrman spun out imaginary dialogue for a movie script, and in so doing committed a hate crime. If the jurors in the O. J. Simpson case could have given Fuhrman the death penalty, he'd be sitting on death row right now. Cutting off your ex-wife's head is a lesser offense in America than using certain words.

Vast areas of public policy debate are treated as indistinguishable from using the N-word (aka: the worst offense against mankind). Thus, Representative Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) took issue with the Republicans' proposed tax cuts, saying: "It's not 'spic' or 'nigger' anymore. They say, 'Let's cut taxes.' "

The spirit of the First Amendment has been effectively repealed for conservative speech by a censorious, accusatory mob. Truth cannot prevail because whole categories of thought are deemed thought crimes.

For a fleeting moment, after the September 11 attack on America, all partisan wrangling stopped dead. The country was infused with patriotism and amazingly unified. The attack on America was such a colossal jolt, liberals even abandoned their endless pursuit of producing some method of counting the ballots in Florida that would have made Al Gore president.

Liberal sneers about President Bush's intelligence suddenly abated—at first for reasons of decorum, but then because of the indisputable fact that Bush was a magnificent leader. In a moment of crisis, the truth overcame liberal naysaying. After having demeaned President Bush as a lightweight frat boy hopelessly ignorant of foreign policy, even Democrats were overcome with relief that Al Gore was not the president.

The bipartisan lovefest lasted precisely three weeks. That was all the New York Times could endure. Impatient with the national mood of patriotism, liberals returned to their infernal griping about George W. Bush-or "Half a Commander in Chief," as he was called in the headline of a lead New York Times editorial on November 5, 2001. From that moment on, the left's primary contribution to the war effort was to complain.

They complained about the detention of terror suspects, they complained we were going to lose the war, they complained about military tribunals for terrorists, they complained about the Bush administration's failure to solve the anthrax cases instantly, they complained about monitoring terrorists' jailhouse conversations, they complained about the war taking too long, they complained about a trial for John Walker, they complained about (nonexistent) ethnic profiling at airports, they complained about the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo, and they complained about Bush's "axis of evil" speech.

And they complained about all the damn flag-wavers. The infernal flag-waving after 9/11 nearly drove liberals out of their gourds. For the left, "flag-waving" is an epithet. Liberals variously called the flag a "joke," "very, very dumb," and-most cutting-not "cosmopolitan." New York University sociology professor Todd Gitlin agonized over the decision to fly the flag outside his apartment (located less than a mile from Ground Zero), explaining: "It's very complicated."

It must have been galling that no one in America cared. Eventually, the New York Times gave up harping about Bush's handling of the war and turned its full attention to attacking Enron.

Here the country had finally given liberals a war against fundamentalism and they didn't want to fight it. They would have, except it would put them on the same side as the United States. In the wake of an attack on America committed by crazed fundamentalist Muslims, Walter Cronkite denounced Jerry Falwell. Ann Hart Coulter (/ˈkoʊltər/; born December 8, 1961) is an American conservative social and political commentator, writer, syndicated columnist, and lawyer. She frequently appears on television, radio, and as a speaker at public and private events.

Coulter rose to prominence in the 1990s as an outspoken critic of the Clinton administration. Her first book concerned the Bill Clinton impeachment, and sprang from her experience writing legal briefs for Paula Jones's attorneys, as well as columns she wrote about the cases. Coulter has described herself as a polemicist who likes to ""stir up the pot"", and does not ""pretend to be impartial or balanced, as broadcasters do"", drawing criticism from the left, and sometimes from the right.

Coulter's syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate began appearing in newspapers, and was featured on major conservative websites.

The nemesis of the left and new standardbearer of the right!

Bill O'Reilly began the hunt for truth by asking elementary and tough questions of the filthy rich, overpaid, left leaning elitist in the News Media and entertainment industries.
Bernard Goldberg then exposed the middle-school truths about the corruptly biased superstructure of the media and so-called mainstream newsroom anchorpersons and the manipulators of information.
Now Ann Coulter puts faces to actions and throws on the finishing touches to the disgustingly open, manipulative and blatant hypocrisies, hate and camouflaged anti-conservative rhetoric of those who falsely profess to be liberal, independent, moderate and/or centrist.
The other day I had the good fortune to watch several interviews between Ann Coulter and a number of clearly liberal and bias talk show hosts and interviewers. The fireworks were magnificent and I could not for the life of me initially understand why all these people who normally hoodwink the American audience with their fake composure, self-control and false sophistication seemed to be so animistic towards her.
So, after she beat James Carville down to parade rest for being an interrupting overbearing fool and offensive slob on crossfire. I decide to get into her book, which I had ordered through Amazon.com, immediately received and placed on my shelf for future attention.
Fifteen pages into it, I found the answer I was looking for. It was staring me right in the face and continued throughout the book. The reason these people, who have been so grossly overpaid with their six, seven and in some cases idiotic eight figure salaries, were so upset when Ann when she comes onto their shows. Is because she just out classes them so profoundly that they are intimidated. She is so intellectually and educationally beyond their level of competence that they cannot possibly debate, dispute, counter or contradict any of her well-founded assertions. So they simply hate her. They find that they are so far below and out of her class that it drives them nuts.
Mr. Spock once made an observation on the original Star Trek that a newly discovered alien species was so far evolved above humans...that the only appropriate comparison would be human evolution above that of the amoebae.
This analogy works perfectly for where Ann Coulter is above these liberal spinners of the news. These, manipulative, intolerant liberal, egotistical charlatans on ABC, NBC and CBS like Ted Koppel, Katie Couric, Dan Rather, Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, Bryant Gumbel, Diane Sawyer, Connie Chung, Mat Lauer and others are simply unable to hold a candle to her in an honest, courteous and professional debate. As she so aptly says, "it is a stunning reflection on the left's monopoly of the news that an opinionated, partisan talk radio host is more accurate than television news programs."
They will try anything to catch her in a way that will allow them to show her up, humiliate her or catch her in a too hastily thought out response to leading or nonsequitur questions. They fail miserably because she is right. They have no basis from which to debate, but to attempt character assassination, word confusion and false innuendoes.
The wonderful and challenging verbiage, candidness, interwoven humor and sagacity of this book strikes a note of understanding, of just how this uneven match up would irk these inept liberal interviewers. Only fifteen pages into the book and you realize these misfits, who have helped to dumb down our children and our nation themselves are simply put, dumb compared to the likes of Ms. Coulter.
Even I, who prided myself on a rather vast vocabulary, believing as one of our past Presidents, that one should learn and use a new word every day, could not readily keep up with her. I found that I had to place a dictionary and thesaurus next to me while reading to keep from skipping an unfamiliar word. An act I swore I would never do as a child.
If nothing else Ann has made many of us aware of our incompetent lack of mastery of the English language. Could this be the lefts negative influence on our public schools, when they care more about outlawing prayer, God or the Pledge of Allegiance and more about teaching the forced acceptance of deviant homosexual conduct...than actually educating us?
The unquestionable command of the English language Ann uses no doubt causes liberals to scamper for their dictionaries and more than likely irks them to no end. This book has placed her head and shoulders above the everyday anchorperson, interviewer and talk show host.
I also appreciated the wonderful opportunity she gives us to highlight the good guys from the bad because unlike Bernard Goldberg. She puts the names there of the good, the bad and the hypocritical in plain sight for you to circle, highlight and/or underline for future references.
I once watched Katrina Vanden Heuvel speak at a Democratic Fund Raiser where she just raked conservatives over the verbal rhetorical partisan coals and called them things I did not think appropriate in public discourse and I thought to myself, my, what a neo-leftist fanatically liberal hate-monger she was.
Well I think she has finally met her match from the conservative side in Ann Coulter although I must add, Ann fights back superbly and does it with much more style and class. So bring on the titans of the left and the right, "We the People" are sitting in the gallery watching this spectacle unfold.
A terrific book, great read and an honest evaluation and no holds barred open exposure of her opponents. This book should be the required main course after Bernard Goldberg's initial appetizer. It exposes the liberal bias run amuck in our society, which produces not one but two idiot Judges who can ban the Pledge of Allegiance merely over the term "under God"...

If a book is a hit if it simultaneously makes you want to cry and laugh out loud, provides fodder for countless hours of fascinating dinner-table conversation, and has the potential to permanently change your world view, then Slander is a hit. Conservatives will surely find soul-satisfying vindication in this book. But writing Slander off as a Conservative circle-jerk would be a serious mistake. After reading the well-documented and footnoted Slander, there can be little argument about the existence of a "vast left-wing media conspiracy" to silence Conservative dissent while promoting a consistent, well-defined Liberal political agenda.
Even if you are a Conservative who is already well familiar with the theories about liberal media bias, you will find new shocking examples of excessive, almost fascist suppression of Conservative discourse. For example, you might not be aware of the difficulty that Conservative authors have getting books published, or the dramatic variance in advance fees paid by publishers to conservative and liberal authors.
Coulter builds a compelling case against liberal media bias, while at the same time lampooning the most irrational and contradictory tenets of liberal philosophy. However, Slander also raises serious issues that can't be dismissed easily. Many of her points will be eye-opening even for those who consider themselves "liberal." For example, should it be considered "hate speech" when the Leftist reporters unceasingly describe the "religious right" as "evil" "authoritarian" "Nazis"? Or when major U.S. news services even-handedly group Islamic militants with retired Midwestern Americans as "rightwing religious conservatives"? Truthfully, what's the difference between marginalizing and demonizing Christians in 21st century America from marginalizing and demonizing Jews in 20th century Germany? Take your favorite liberal rant against religion and substitute the word "Jews" for "Christian Conservatives". Remind you of anyone? Scary, isn't it? Coulter paints the picture and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions without preaching.
This is only one example of the many larger social issues that Coulter identifies in Slander. In spite of the serious, almost frightening nature of the issues raised by the book, Coulter consistently maintains a wry and bombastic sense of humor that offsets the sobering recognition that the situation is much worse than most of us have realized.
In Slander, Coulter organizes, identifies and documents broad themes of liberal media abuse. For example, she groups examples of liberal media "spin" into such categories as:
- Calling Republicans "Dumb". Coulter effectively demonstrates that every Republican presidential candidate in this century has had to endure the endless questioning of their intelligence by the mainstream media, each one labeled dumber than the last. Conversely, all Democratic presidential candidates, in spite of occasional overwhelming evidence to the contrary, have been roundly identified as intellectual giants. Some, like Al Gore, even labeled as "possibly too smart."
- The Religious Right Straw Man. Coulter points out that the Left has never specifically identified just exactly who the "religious right" really is supposed to be: the mainstream media uses the term even-handedly to describe Saudi Arabian fundamental Islamic Terrorist groups as well as elderly American retired couples from the Midwest.
Slander will undoubtedly be criticized for Coulter's over-use of the thesaurus and her "take-no-prisoners" approach to describing liberal groups (she refers to Hollywood starlets more than once as "silicone bimbos"). I suspect that these facts plus her confrontational writing style will cause Slander to be written off by liberals as pandering to conservatives. But 30 plus pages of footnotes add enough "gravitas" to raise the book above the level of conservative mythology. Furthermore, the social issues Coulter raises are serious enough to warrant substantive investigation by all Americans, Conservative or Liberal.
