The Earldom of Bridgewater was held by the Dukes of Bridgewater from 18 Jun 1720 until 8 Mar 1803, when on the death of Francis [Egerton], 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, 6th Earl of Bridgewater, etc. the Marquessate of Brackley and the Dukedom of Bridgewater became extinct and the Earldom of Bridgewater passed to his cousin,

entered the Army 1771, Capt 1776, Maj 1779, Lt Col, 7th Light Dragoons 1790, Col 1793, Maj Gen 1795, Col of the 14th Light Dragoons 1797-1823, Lt Gen 1802 and Gen 1812;  Member of Parliament (Tory) for Morpeth 1777-80 and for Brackley 1780-1803; he left his estates in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Co Durham, Flintshire, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire and Yorkshire to his great nephew, Hon John Cust, styled Viscount Alford, provided the latter had managed to get made Duke or Marquess of Bridgewater, of was next heir to such titles (for example, by his father or great-uncle having managed to get promoted in the peerage to such ranks, with in the case of his great-uncle suitable remainder to Viscount Alford); if these provisions were not met (which they were not) the estates were to go to the next heir; but these provisions were judged illegal and Viscount Alford's son the 2nd Earl Brownlow succeeded to the estates in 1851, though not until after lengthy, complex and divisive litigation.

On the death of the 8th Earl of Bridgewater the Barony of Ellesmere, the Viscountcy of Brackley and the Earldom of Bridgewater all became extinct.
