Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Resort is often celebrated for its majestic ambiance and historical allure, with many guests charmed by its elegant decor and inviting atmosphere. The hotel's picturesque location enhances the experience, though some guests suggest the amenities could be modernized. While views on value diverge, with concerns over extra charges and dining quality, the staff's exceptional service and the hotel's overall cleanliness receive high marks. Room opinions are mixed, with praise for cleanliness but some calls for updated features.

The weather was wintry as the ferry made the short crossing to The Island but the welcoming smile & warm greeting from Michael got our two night break off to a great start. Next heart lifting sight was the blazing log fire in the Reception Hall, where the staff are friendly & efficient. Michael showed us to our big bedroom with its four poster bed and adjoining bathroom complete with freestanding bath/shower. This is surely the cosiest ever Castle! Our mullioned windows looked out on the tree lined estuary, no traffic noise here. We opted for bar food that first night, some of the best we’ve ever had. Stephen couldn’t have been more helpful & friendly, a thoroughly delightful evening. Breakfasts( all you could wish for) are served in the bright morning room/conservatory which catches every gleam of sunshine on the grand old trees. Despite the unreliable weather, we enjoyed fabulous walks all around the island, watching for shy deer half hidden in the foliage and a wonderful variety of seabirds. The golf course looks absolutely beautiful.. So much to see - besides fascinating Waterford city itself we drove to Dunmore East with its quaint old thatched cottages and windswept Tramore with the spray blowing over its magnificent long beach.. A gourmet dinner in the big buzzy formal diningroom provided great people watching, a fitting finale to a lovely couple of days.

My birthday surprise was Afternoon Tea at Waterford Castle where a roaring fire greeted us in the entrance hall. Sitting in the wonderful sun room with its magnificent skylight overlooking the gardens, we were served a splendid selection of sandwiches and sweet treats. Everything was delicious. The staff were very attentive and friendly, especially Michael. It was a most enjoyable and memorable afternoon. I also add that Covid regulations - hand sanitisers, masks and tracing info - were adhered to.

First time visiting Waterford Castle even though I only live 30 mins away. A very unique location and there is a real sense of grandeur walking up to the castle and in the high ceilinged walls with hanging tapestries.

My girlfriend had phoned ahead to let the kitchen know she is vegan and they had an altered menu for her, including the little samplers, dessert and sorbet which was very thoughtful.

All the ingredients are locally sourced and really well cooked and presented. My starter of rabbit terrine with wild garlic was lovely and light, followed by a tender fillet steak, fois gra and the creamiest mash. I also ordered a side of seasonal veg which was a very generous portion and cooked nice and al dente. The highlight for me was the dessert, the dark chocolate tart with Guinness ice cream made me want to like the plate it was so good!

My girlfriends dessert was equally as good, the chef had prepared a blood orange sorbet with chocolate mousse with blueberry coolie, this had her main of crispy tofu with chickpeas, broadbeans, artichoke and seaweed were her favorites and had been prepared completely off menu which was amazing.

The service was 5 star and the 3 courses plus the amuse bouche was €60 a head (€4 for a side of veg) which I feel it tremendous value.

We stayed here in July in the presidential suite for 2 nights Dinner/Bed/Breakfast. It was a birthday treat and it could not have gone better. From the outset i was delighted that our child's breakfast and additional bed was offered free during booking, as that was not actually included in the rate, so that was a nice start to the process.
The suite itself is huge, and you really know you are in a castle when staying in this suite. We got an amazing sleep as the bedroom itself is so far in from the door of the suite separated by a small hall, huge bathroom and additional room, so you are far removed from any potential noise outside the room. The curtains (all 4 massive sets) block out every bit of light also. I definitely felt this suite was worth the extra cost.
The respect for Covid19 guidelines was excellent, couldn't have felt safer.
The breakfast each morning was ordered and served to the table, great selection of food options, the quality was excellent and we felt so relaxed we were left to ourselves as long as we wanted and could call on someone for service whenever needed.
The night time food was excellent also, we had the fine dining option one night and that was fabulous, we had the 3 course meal the other night and again no complaints on food or service, great choice, served freshly cooked and piping hot.
We had lunch one day in the onsite golf clubhouse and that was perfect also and a great view.
there's an excellent scenic walk all around the perimeter of the island, we did that each day, well worth it.
the friendliness and attentiveness of all the staff was a highlight also, just down to earth everyone on top of their job individually, but it's amazing how many places cannot achieve that.
it was our first time staying and we will definitely return.

We stayed at the lodges last weekend and found ours to smell like it hadn't been aired. The table outside was covered in sand, indicating it wasn't disinfected or cleaned from the previous people. The outside patio areas could do with some love.

We booked the golf club for dinner on our first night and they said our table was inside (in a room on our own in the club). As the weather was lovely outside we asked could we eat outside instead, as other people were, but we were told no and we have to eat inside as we booked and outside is reserved for golfers. We did request twice and the 2nd time the waiter told us if we wanted we could go talk to the supervisor. It's not really up to the customer to seek out your superior to make a reasonable request. To avoid the hassle we just ate inside.

We chased staff all evening for our orders, drinks, kids desserts that took 40 minutes, the bill was asked for 3 times. Staff are not trained at all, don't clear tables, when they do spray disinfectant while drinks are on the table. Every staff member was wearing their masks around their chin or just mouth. I totally appreciate its hot but it just looks bad and lacking in Covid training.

Overall it was grand. I was at a wedding here before and again found the lack of can do attitude from staff really let's the place down. Wouldn't come back or recommend it as customer service is just very bad.

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We are disappointed you did not fully enjoy your stay with us and we will investigate the issues you encountered regarding the Lodges and dining in the Clubhouse. All our staff received rigorous safety training prior to re-opening and we have not received any other negative feedback from guests regarding Covid compliance, which we take very seriously. We do hope we can welcome you back to the Island again another time for a better experience.

Unfortunately our stay ended up being something like a stay at Fawlty Towers.

On arrival it was very clear that the two receptionists were arguing with each other.
The tension could be cut with a knife! One was trying to check us in and the other was on a call however they were asking questions of each other and snapping back the answers.

On arrival in the room we wanted to open the windows (as the rooms are extremely warm), two decorative cushions had been placed in front of them and in order to open the windows we had to move them. Upon moving them there were cobwebs in the corners on the windows and up the sides.

Our first night we had our early bird dinner which had to be sent back as the chips were raw and uncooked.

The next day it was a surprise to staff when we arrived for breakfast that their were three of us! Confusion ensued as to where we might sit. While eating breakfast there were lots of flies flying around the dining room.

We went for walk and returned for lunch. We had to search for somebody to order and get menus from. The food was delicious.

We returned to our rooms to make some tea and coffee and the UHT milk in the room was expired since April.

We went for our fine dining dinner that night and our amuse bouche was forgotten about and steak for our mains were overcooked, having asked for medium rare and getting a well done steak. This was brought to the attention of the restaurant manager.

Again the next morning at breakfast we were met with searching for somebody to seat us and met with surprise that yes we were a party of three. Again the dining room had flies flying around.

There were a couple of other things as well to add to the already litany of things going awry.

However staff were extremely nice and welcoming but very disorganised.

All of this was brought to attention on a comment card we left and with the restaurant manager and I followed up with an email to the hotel. I received no response.

We were really looking forward to staying here having heard lots about the hotel but unfortunately I would not recommend nor would I return.

We visited Waterford Castle in October and were blown away by the beauty of the grounds and the care and attention from the staff. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing experience straight out of a hallmark movie!

We stayed in the Kildare room in the castle, the bed was so comfortable the shower was spacious with excellent water pressure. The windows overlooked a beautiful field where we could see deer from our window! The food in the Muenster room for dinner was excellent and we could not have asked for better service from the waitstaff. The Fitzgerald room is one of the most charming bars we’ve been to and it truly feels like you’re grabbing a drink at a friends house- the room is beautiful with nice lounge spaces to enjoy conversation and drinks.

Breakfast in the morning was equally as impressive with one of the best eggs Benedict’s I’ve ever had! We also got to try out trap and skeet shooting on the grounds with an instructor- highly recommend! We didn’t have time to explore the golf course or do the nature walks but we loved our time on the island and downtown Waterford is just a short drive from the castle!

We enjoyed our stay so much we decided to host our wedding here as well- I will write a separate review for that experience!

I have just returned from spending 2 nights at Waterford Castle for my wedding, no matter what I say here, I probably won’t do the hotel, the staff and Gillian and Gavin justice. Through our dealings with Gillian, I was 99% sure that we would have no problems with anything on the day. We arrived the day before, and had an informal evening in the bar with bar food, all of which was amazing, the castle was still had Christmas decorations up, and the ambiance was fantastic

I stayed in the Lodges the night before, as did some of our guests, we could not fault them, and the value is fantastic as was remarked on by our guests. The hotel rooms are fantastic old worldly, and couldn’t be faulted.

When I walked in to the castle, I was blown away by the set up for our civil ceremony.

From then I knew everything else on the day would be amazing, the mulled wine and Prosecco, the canapés, the steak bites were amazing.

Our starter was chicken terrine, and couldn’t be faulted, guests were given a choice of a refreshing mojioto sorbet or a sweet potato, coconut and lemongrass soup, both were fantastic. The main was a choice of venison or sea bass, I had venison which was lovely and there were no complaints about the sea bass.

The desert consisted of a trio of raspberry cheesecake, white chocolate and orange mousse and berry payola and were all delicious.

A finish of tea coffee and petit fours made this a memorable meal.

After that, the day went off without a hitch, and we were superbly looked after by the staff, as we were by the waiting staff during the meal.

The staff and the setting of the castle made a big day for us more than memorable, and I can’t thank them enough for that with a special thanks to Gillian( I hope I’m half as good at my job as she is at hers) and Gavin.

All in all we had a day that will be forever in my memory and a special evening the night before the wedding.

Stayed with my husband for 2 nights this August. It was magical. The short ferry crossing to the island, the impressive drive way to the castle from the ferry, a big open fireplace in the reception area and even though it was a beautiful sunny day when we arrived the log fire somehow made the place so welcoming. Our suite had beautiful views, all in all it was like stepping back in time but will all the modern conveniences. My first experience of sleeping in a castle and it was everything I imagined it would be.
All the staff were very pleasant and helpful . Between breakfast and evening meals we experienced dining in both the main dining hall and the smaller dining room. Both were excellent. We will definitely be back.

We recently had the pleasure of staying in this beautiful castle hotel on a one night break away.On arrival we had a very quick check in and met with friendly attentive staff at reception.
We stayed in the burg room which was decorated very elegantly and in keeping with the castle decor.Once we checked in we headed out to explore the castle grounds and the island itself. There is a beautiful scenic walk along the river Suir around the perimeter of the island with spectacular views and wildlife along the way. They also have a number of spacious self catering lodges which looked like they would be ideal for families with facilities such as a playground and a soccer pitch.
That evening we dined in the Munster room and had the fine dining option included in our booking. The food was exceptional and it was nice to see a lot of local and seasonal produce on the menu.Great Covid 19 measures are also in place around the castle so you feel safe and credit needs to be given to all the staff during these difficult times we are in.
Overall we had an excellent experience in Waterford Castle hotel and will definitely be returning in the near future.

The Castle is located approximately 5 kilometres from the centre of Waterford City. A taxi would be recommended to travel from the hotel to the downtown area.
