1970 Directed by Stan Harris
John Wayne and an all-star cast tell the story of America.
If you’re in the mood for an uplifting tribute to America and all she stands for, look no further than this gem of a telecast from 1970. SWING OUT, SWEET LAND is a star-studded celebration of our heritage and heroes, punctuated by delightful dance numbers and bits of comedy. I loved the film’s message about preserving - not erasing! - our past, while admitting our mistakes and forever striving towards a better future. I thought the conversation between Mark Twain (Bing Crosby) and Frederick Douglas (Roscoe Lee Browne) was especially fitting for this theme. Well-written and highly entertaining, it’s a lighthearted look at the men and moments that made this nation great. Some of the humor was a bit racy…
John Wayne hosts this legend-filled tribute to America, which has not only music but also skits on our history.
I must admit that I'm really shocked that SWING OUT, SWEET LAND isn't a lot more popular. Well, I'm shocked more people haven't seen it because it features a terrific cast full of wonderful legends. The film was certainly meant to be a patriotic one as it looks back at various things that happened in America.
Wayne hosts all of this and he actually does a very good job with it as you can tell he's quite passionate about the country and you simply believe every word he's saying. There are several music acts along the way including Glen Campbell, Wayne's…
How he got that horse on the seventh floor, I'll never know.

I can't explain it but unlike when it happens today all these famous people getting together for a cause isn't awful and doesn't fell forced. I'm not even American and I enjoyed this.
Bob Hope is the MVP though
John Wayne hosts a star-studded salute to America with skits and musical numbers. Seems more like a variety television special than a TV movie, but it's listed as a TV movie.
Anyone who likes the guests; including Johnny Cash, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Michael Landon, Lucille Ball, and more; will enjoy this. If you're not a fan of Wayne or any of his guests, you may not enjoy it as much.
Released on DVD as John Wayne's Tribute to America.
