A quiet, soft folk pop album with some elegance. It just needs some tracks more to step out, because it is even too solid. A good album to relax a bit, if you want something peaceful. I recommend to read the lyrics at the same time when listening, you get more of it and at least I could focused more the album than when I didn't read them.

I'm not sure why I didn't catch this the last time I listened, but "Laid in Earth" is a reworking of Henry Purcell's "When I Am Laid in Eath" (a/k/a Dido's Lament) from Dido and Aeneas (written in the late 1600s!). The original is even heavier. What else to say about Ane Brun? She has a unique and lovely voice and I think that I like it best on this album, where it is sometimes sad and always paired with lovely instrumentation. I haven't heard the debut album yet, but my hopes are high.

A sweet album but nothing more than that. It's an album that gives you the feeling you've heard it before... not very unique or outstanding. In this album ane's voice is very delicate and charming but she definitely sound like "all the other singer-songwriters female vocalists". This album is not really my cup of tea but I still like the things she was able to do with it.

Ane Brun is yet another artist I discovered through the review pages of RYM. 'A Temporary Dive' is a short ten track album that leaves you feeling relaxed if slightly melancholy. She certainly reminds me of Jewel in her vocal style but the overall feel of the album is more akin to something you would hear at Ronnie Scotts than on mainstream radio.
There are a number of highlights here without there being anything that is going to change your life. Similarly though there are no real duffers either.
The best two tracks for me are track four 'My Lover Will Go' which has a very definite feel of war time French Cafe about it despite the flamenco guitar and the second cut 'Rubber & Soul' which is possibly the track that most conjures up the memories of nights in a dimly lit smoky jazz club.
Not far behind in terms of quality come the album opener 'To Let Myself Go' and third track Balloon Ranger',which allegedly is about the difficulties she had learning English. This gives the album a solid four track opening which in truth it struggles to build upon as things drop off a little during the middle part of the album although 'Laid In Earth' is pretty good despite being a little maudlin. Something which is not easy given the general feel of the album as a whole.
Fortunately for Brun the album pick up again towards the end with the strangely named 'Song Number 6', which is actually track 9 !. A duet with Ron Sexsmith it has a nice uptempo feel and is guaranteed to get the most pedestrian of feet tapping. The final track 'The Fight Song' with its twangy out of tune slide guitar ends the album nicely and is surely fairly unique being as it is about a horse. Happily Brun is more lyrically astute than 'Father Ted' so there is no mention of fetlocks blowing in the wind here.
Overall then 'A Temporary Dive' is a nice pleasant album that is easy to listen to and will provide thirty odd minutes of acoustic smoky jazz club memories for those that can remember such things.

HARP said to call her the Anti DiFranco. I guess that would work, if she hadn't learned how to play guitar and develop her own style by covering, among other things, Ani DiFranco. I'd say Ane Brun is more along the lines of what could've become of Sheryl Crow had she started hanging out with Jewel at the turn of the millennium instead of Kid Rock. Alternatively, she's what Jewel could have become if she had her heart broken and actually reflected on who would save her soul instead of getting sprayed with a fire hose at the Daytona 500. But enough pointlessness...
Ane "Brun" Brunvoll is a Norwegian singer-songwriter currently trading wares in Sweden. Although she comes from the suicide capital of the planet, her lyrics are... actually, her lyrics tend to reflect that fact. While she is intermittently committed to the thought that love is there to be had, her poetical imagery is as icy as the piano and strings that often accompany her. Whilst emo continues down the spiral of catering to the emotionless and the emotionally impotent, A Temporary Dive is a gem of an honest break-up album. Hear that, emo? Those are called feelings. You'll understand when you grow up.

She sounds less like Joni Mitchell now, settling into her own raspy, rootsy vocals. Her songs too are less country-sounding. Somehow, this is less striking as well.

Voices this rootsy usually only come across named Emmylou Harris or Alison Krauss. Add some decent songs, and you find yourself listening to a rather satisfying album. No particular highlights here, but still a fine effort from an artist that hopefully has more tricks up her sleeve.
