The horse love came across a little creepy. Easy to say that Gallant Bess (1946) wasn't really for me. The visuals where great. The only MGM feature film done in Cinecolor, and it gave it a allure. Just felt the animal lover mood lacked fine-tuning, making it a oddball experience.
Aimed at tweens? Does the country-boy-in-miliary thing like Sgt York, but it focuses so much on his horse that it plays like a Walt Disny docufiction "true life adventure" -- the rel'p.s between platoon-mates are like those of kids on the playground and even the battle sequences are bloodless, low-stakes and cozy.
Also: technicolor. And a tag at the end to notify us that animal action was supervised by American Humane Society, the earliest movie in which I've ever seen such a thing.
