This is a really nice jazz album but that pianist kinda steals the show. He is incredible. All the performers are great but his solos are something else.

Album 200 of 1001: Home Is Where the Music Is by Hugh Masekela
And so the streak continues. The day I find a jazz album I don’t have a deep love and respect for is going to be an interesting one. It isn’t even a genre I actively listen to on my own time that much. But when I put it on and really sink into it, it hits just right. Sadly, I think I’m conditioned to look at an album like this, that I’ve never heard of, and that seems to be relatively unknown, and assume bad things. It’s a habit I’m still trying to break. But this was a pleasure to listen to. It has almost all of the things I look for in a solid jazz album. I love how long the songs. There isn’t one track that feels like it doesn’t get enough time. But they also don’t go for too long, which is nice, because this is around 75 minutes long. And the way the songs build up and down is perfect. They keep things interesting, and move from section to section very smoothly. And the band is fantastic as well. This might not have been released during the jazz golden age of the mid 20th century, so you won’t hear any big names on this. But every musician still has just as much musical prowess with their own instrument. And they each one of them gets ample time to show off their abilities. The drummer in particular has a great solo that takes up the majority of Blues for Huey. Overall, this album takes the best parts of jazz and fuses it with funk, soul and Afrocentric sounds to give it even more snap. Great stuff.

There is stuff here that is certainly good, I especially love when they let the piano shine, but it is still an overly long, somewhat repetitive jazz album. Still, better than most.

Hugh Masekela's expansive double-LP here isn't necessarily a groundbreaking jazz fusion or afrobeat album, but it is damn good jazz. Masekela's musicians are sharp throughout, and the compositions are filled with all kinds of creative flavors and feels that paint vivid scenery across each of these songs - it's that feeling that's the epitome of jazz to me, and Masekela delivers in droves.

Shaping the Mold: Review #251

A stellar jazz double album from a brilliant jazz musician. There's so many motifs here that hang onto to your ear long after the track has faded, like on "Maesha" with that line that almost sounds like the "happy golden days" line of that one Christmas song but transformed into this warm, sentimental whimper. "Maseru" is great as well with that clasping drum beat and those glancing keys behind Bra Hugh's mesmerizing flugelhorn(my favorite horn). It's a little too long for how much variety there is and I just am not a big fan of Ingoo Pow-Pow as I feel it doesn't fit the album at all, but there's also one of the greatest drum solos I feel like in jazz history on here, so yeah. Great album.

This is really good stuff, Masekela was clearly brilliant but Larry Willis's piano work deserves special mention.

The music itself moves gracefully in between afro-jazz, fusion, spiritual jazz and the more urban styles of american jazz.

Some of it like 'part of a whole' 'maseru' and 'big apple' are surprisingly funky and joyous whilst 'minawa' is a stunningly beautiful piano based piece. The version of Miriam Makeba's 'unhome' is another high point. While i feel it runs out of steam a bit by side 4 this is still clearly one of the best albums of its kind and i doubt Masekela made better....But i'm looking forward to finding out if i am wrong.

Home Is Where the Music Is ... Side A, Part of a Whole - a busy and impressive piece, exciting - and Minawa - low key, somewhat somber, quite beautiful. Side B, three very bustling tracks, one named Big Apple and definitely reflecting New York, the other Maseru. In the middle of these two is Unhome, a little forgettable but lovely easy listening. Side C, three tracks - anxious, conflicted Inner Crisis, Blues for Huey which is essentially just a drum roll, and Nomali, a relaxed sort of lounge piece. Side D ... the forgettable and very long Maesha and then Ingoo Pow Pow, some Afrofusion. Fills its sides but doesn't necessarily justify them ... still a satisfying LP.

This is more standard jazz than fusion if you ask me, but I do appreciate it regardless. None of the tracks here are bad, but there aren't many standouts either ("Inner Crisis" probably stands out the most). Masekela and his band deliver a solid hour-plus of music.

Favorite tracks: Inner Crisis, Ingoo Pow-Pow
