HORRIBLE. Let me start off by saying I enjoyed all of Lisa Stone’s other books as well as the Cathy glass books (her other pen name). But this one was DUMB. I had to force myself to the end just to finish it but there were several times I was about ready to just chunk it. Ugh. Don’t waste your time on this one.

I read this book very quickly because I thought the plot so interesting. Doesn't everyone wonder exactly what is transplanted during a heart transplant? Just the heart - or is there more? Do cells really trap emotions, personality? And do these traits enter a new body intact? I enjoyed the trip this book took me on. It made me hope and wonder and I looked forward to picking it up every time I had to put it down. And the ending! I won't spoil it for you but I loved it.

This book was a mixed bag for me. After discovering the author’s foster parenting true books (under pen name Cathy Glass) which I adored, I was taken aback by this book. The language is often crude and explicit, in an unnecessary and unfortunate way. This is disconcerting from a writer who has built her career on fostering children. I also didn’t like so much of the story being told from the villain’s point of view. He is extremely disturbing and I didn’t want to be inside him seeing the world from his vantage point. However there is a compelling story here and some compelling characters, especially the villain’s mother. It kept my interest but at some points I was disgusted and almost stopped reading. The author is a good storyteller and I wish she had edited this book a bit to remove the explicit language. There are better ways to describe what happens without needing to go there. Especially when I have put my trust into her because of her other books. She has not kept the two pen names separate but freely advertises the Lisa Stone books under her other name. I love detective novels and psychological thrillers, but the ones I read don’t use crude language as if writing a porn story.

I really loved this book. I can see how if someone got a new heart a part of them becomes the other person. If person was bad they might be as well. Scary to think about. This is a subject I now will look up. Will you be writhing more? I hope. This is great. Thank you for your work.

This novel is one of those that you can’t put down. The premise is
an interesting one based on Cellular Memory after a heart
transplant! I have read all of Cathy Glass’s books and this one
by another pen name is a stunning read! Now I am going to
read another Lisa Stone novel. I am addicted!!!

I have been debating on what to rate this one and settled on a 3.5. Don't let that put you off this book, because I enjoyed it. I just had a few too many little niggles with it to give it a higher rating. This isn't the first book I've read that uses cellular memory as a plot point, and I find the idea of it quite fascinating. This book dealt with it in a very different way than the others I've read. Look up cellular memory with transplant patients if you're curious! It's the idea of people that have received an organ transplant changing habits, tastes, sexuality, and even blood types! The author actually references some real reported instances in this story. You don't have to believe it, but it's interesting reading all the same.

Shane... is a giant jerk. He takes advantage of his girlfriend, abusing her and using her for money and access to her car. You have to feel bad for her, bullied into submission by this poor excuse for a man. He has absolutely no likeable qualities whatsoever. He meets his maker quite young due to his own recklessness, racing along the road in his girlfriend's car to pick up beer after leaving her bleeding on the floor. Is it possible that something good will come from his short life?

There's at least a few people that hope so. Jacob is a young man with a failing heart who is the polar opposite of Shane. Growing increasingly weak while he waits for a transplant, he relies on his caring parents and lovely girlfriend to help him out. When a match is found, they're overjoyed and thank God. He is the son of a reverend, and his family prayed he would be saved. Their prayers are answered just in time. The reverend swears to God that he will never ask him for anything again... but he had no idea what was coming.

Jacob begins to experience a complete personality change. He snaps on his parents. He shirks his responsibilities. He's suddenly a violent, weed-smoking, pornography addict. Not exactly fitting for the son of a reverend, and certainly not who he used to be. What's happened to the sweet son they used to have, and what's next?

I felt like some of Jacob's actions were in the wrong order and would have been happier if they'd escalated in severity. One of the worst things he does happens quite early in the book, though thankfully we are spared the details. Many of my problems with the book are such huge spoilers that I'm hesitant to put them here, even with a spoiler tag. There were also a couple of continuity mistakes that I hope were caught before the book went to print, one being that the woman Shane was dating when he died didn't know of his demise, then she alludes to the fact that she had a boyfriend who perished in an auto accident, before claiming she didn't know he actually died towards the end. I also thought it featured some pretty weird opinions about marijuana and didn't quite buy the ending. It still boasted some very interesting subject matter and kept me reading.

I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Avon Books, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

Wonder if Jacob will retain the memory of Shane although it seems asking for ice cream and Earl Grey tea he has taken on a new memory. Unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a STAND OUT book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2020
I’ve had this book sitting on my shelf for a long time, and the silver lining of the lockdown has meant I’ve finally shifted through my piles and discovered some “real finds”. The Darkness Within is a story that instantly grabs you and holds onto you until the final page… it has the WOW factor and I highly recommend psychological thriller lovers to grab this book, if they haven’t already.

In this story, Stone explores the subject of cellular memory with terrifying consequences…

When Jacob Wilson; the son of a Reverend, finally gets the call from the hospital that they’ve found a viable heart, everyone is over the moon that the young, kind and sweet Jacob has been given the chance to live. His father and mother thank God for listening to their prayers.

Except the miracle has turned into a living nightmare. Jacob wakes up as a new man… and not a very nice one. As the days go by his behaviour becomes even more volatile and crude. The doctors say it’s nothing to worry about and only a common side effect of a long and difficult transplant surgery. His mother thinks differently. His girlfriend knows Jacob is no longer the man she fell in love with.

He’s a monster.

With the doctors dismissing the idea that his new heart could be changing his personality, and her husband continuing to not face the truth, it’s up to Elizabeth to trust her instincts and explore the option that the heart inside her son is from a very bad man.

Meanwhile a parallel story develops and as the two stories combine with catastrophic effects, it’s a race against the clock to save others and the son they used to love…

The concept of this plot instantly piqued my interest, how much can a person’s behaviour be transferred to another person through an organ?

As the reader, you’ve met the previous owner of the heart in the first few chapters and I could only sit at the edge of my seat throughout turning the pages, to discover how much of his character Stone would release into Jacob. I was terrified!

It’s one of those stories that will make you feel uncomfortable, it will have you screaming at the other characters to see the true reality of the situation they are in, and you won’t be able to put the book down until the final page as the pace is unbelievably fast and absorbing.

I am pretty sure this is the first book I’ve read by Lisa Stone/Cathy Glass and I’ll be adding more to my TBR very soon because her ability to delve into the deepest and darkest thoughts of her characters created a bond with me; as the reader, which was unbreakable throughout.

You all know I love psychological thrillers, and it’s hard to stand out in this genre as more authors break in to it, but this book is a STAND OUT book, it’s a psychological thriller with a twist. It will have you questioning not only the characters but the subject matter.

Gripping just doesn’t even seem to cover the effect this book had on me.

The plot is quite spellbinding as from the very beginning, even if I would have liked to see something more of the "old" Jacob in order to appreciate the gap between the before surgery /after surgery better. Anyway, I've loved the plot and most of the dialogues, never boring and pretty close to a certain kind of social environment. Totally recommended, you won't be disappointed.
