The Murder of Mr. Wickham (MR. DARCY & MISS TILNEY MYSTERY Book 1) Kindle Edition

A summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Jane Austen's Mr. Wickham—one of literature’s most notorious villains—meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery from a New York Times bestselling author featuring Austen’s leading literary characters.

“Had Jane Austen sat down to write a country house murder mystery, this is exactly the book she would have written.” —Alexander McCall Smith

The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. In this tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, from
New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

I am impressed with the way the writer came up with the idea of using multiple characters from virtually all of Jane Austen's known works; then using it as a platform for the next generation. There are many people who have tried to write sequels, I have had a stab at it myself though simply for my own amusement. In this one our hero and heroine are Jonathon Darcy and Juliet Tilney; it is immediately obvious who their parents are. At a gathering of guests they find themselves caught up in a murder/mystery situation. More than that I do not want to say as it will spoil it for other readers. One thing I do want to mention is Mr Darcy's attitude to our heroine. He was not very accepting of her and that puzzles me because she displayed characteristics similar to that of the young Elizabeth Bennet....a young lady full of confidence and intelligence. Perhaps he thinks she will lead Jonathon astray though I think it would do the said young man alot of good. Having enjoyed this one ,I am looking forward to the next one in the series and hope it will be, if not better, equally as good !

This is great fun, drawing in characters from various of Jane's novels, true to character and well developed. You need to get your head around differing timeliness, so some (Darcys) are 20 years married and some only just (Brandons etc). New characters such as Jonothan Darcy take their place fully rounded, and young Juliet Tilney is a perfect result of her mother's spirits and her father's intelligence. Well worth the read, and I didn't discover the killer until revealed. Very tight, brava Claudia Gray, a new author to me. Obviously a lover of Agatha Christie too I'd say

I read this in a day - well, slightly longer than a day, because it's 2am. A fabulous book with extremely well-penned characters. It is so rare to read an Austen-inspired novel and to feel that everyone has been done proper justice.

The new characters introduced are definitely deserving of a sequel and/or a dramatisation, and I'm disappointed to find there isn't one yet. Death Comes To Pemberley was great, but this novel would be much more riveting.

I can't speak highly enough of this novel, in short. It is beyond fabulous.

Enjoyable book and the two new characters are the strong point. Fanny and Edmund are really hard work though.

This book was such great fun! Many of Jane Austen’s literary characters from across all her novels come together for a month-long house party at Donwell Abbey, the home of Emma and Mr Knightley. Also in attendance are Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, Marianne and Colonel Brandon, Anne and Captain Wentworth, and Fanny and Edmund Bertram. The Northanger Abbey family are represented by daughter of the house, Juliet Tilney.

I often imagine what might have happened to favourite characters when we leave them happily ever after at the end of a book. This goes in some way to imagining that for Austen’s characters. As an Austen fan, I had the fun of knowing about the characters’ backstories which added a level of enjoyment to my reading.

When Mr Wickham turns up uninvited and comes to a nasty end on a stormy night, it is clear the murderer must be one of the household. The magistrate called to investigate is another familiar name, Frank Churchhill. With his low opinion and pre-conceived ideas about the lower classes, two of the guests feel there is no guarantee of justice and decide they must take on the case themselves. Our sleuths are Juliet Tilney and Jonathan, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Darcy. Setting impropriety aside, they set about finding out who might have reason to want Wickham dead.

Well, it turns out that as well as the Darcys, who you might think would be obvious suspects, Mr Wickham has had dealings of one sort or another with all of the families and many would have good reason to be pleased at his demise. I enjoyed following Miss Tilney and Mr Darcy’s investigations, as they put aside their own ideas about the guests as well as their own poor first impressions of each other. The author casts suspicion on almost everyone and there were plenty of red herrings. My money was on one particular character but the author did a good job of making me doubt myself. I was wrong of course!

I felt the author portrayed the feel of the era in a very satisfying way with the way the characters spoke and behaved feeling very true to that of an Austen novel. The book ends in a way that suggests the characters will be setting up further meetings between Miss Tilney and and young Mr Darcy and of course, as I mentioned above there are at least another two books in which they will feature. I look forward to following their further adventures and finding out if esteem and admiration will turn to love.

Exceeded my expectations. I thought the characters’ personalities, behaviours and attitudes remained true to the original books. Would definitely recommend.

An ex silent book based on Austen's characters meeting for a houseparty when Wickham add simply turns up uninvited. Everyone is horrified as we find he is hated by mostly everyone. Then he is murdered. Who has done the deed? And so, follows the mystery before some servant is charged with the murder.

It soon became clear that the author is American. The use of “Write me” instead of “Write to me”, “gotten”instead of “got” and an unusual use of the verb to startle. These things irritate me and I just wish that authors would study 19th century UK English before putting pen to paper. Shame on the editor too! If these things don’t bother you then you may find enough entertainment in this drivel that takes great liberties with Jane Austen’s characters.

This was truly a treat to read. I only have a passing familiarity with Jane Austen’s books so most of the characters were new to me. So before I continue with the rest of the series, you will please excuse me as I go to _finally_ read Miss Austin’s fine novels.

An enjoyable escape into the time of Jane Austin. No distasteful sex or violence to suffer reading through. Book 2 is just as enjoyable and does not disappoint. Would not mind seeing a book 3 that takes place at Rosings, and Lady Catherine playing detective also.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr Wickham lives too long….
Reviewed in Australia on 29 October 2023
Mr Wickham is a deplorable character in Austen’s Pride & Prejudice novels, and he continues to be so in Claudia Gray’s book. Unfortunately, since Gray has to give the reader significant context about each character in the story (linking all of Austen’s work), the actual murder central to the plot takes far too long to happen. It takes almost 5 chapters of a 380 page book for the murder to happen, which is far to long!

Once the murder actually occurs, the whodunnit of the story is interesting, and I love the main characters. But I hope the pacing is better in the next novel!
