Seriously ill, concert pianist Karen Duncan is admitted to a Swiss sanitorium. Despite being attracted to Dr Tony Stanton she ignores his warnings of possibly fatal consequences unless she rests completely. Rather, she opts for a livelier time in Monte Carlo with dashing Paul Clermont.

The last fifteen minutes of The Other Love are completely ridiculous, with a would-be rapist turned into a willing, trusted protector-cum-chauffeur thanks to the gift of a gaudy ring, and the most unconvincingly love story to ever walk the earth suddenly appearing as a happy ending. But you know what? Barbara Stanwyck is so goddamn great in every single frame of the movie that it doesn't even matter — she elevates this nonsense into the sky, and then some.

Oh my gosh! I have such a headache from this dumb movie! A lady Karen ( Stanwyck) has a “ hole in her lung.” Her doctor Dr.Stanton ( Niven) says she must be in bed a month in Sanatorium. A new beau Paul (Conte) takes her away. Oh and she plays a piano. But Doc says “ no more piano”? Why? Smokes again! She coughs. Then Dr.Stanton shows up? Really? He followed her to Monte Carlo! Creepy. Then Karen coughs. But smokes. And coughs. Everyone in Sanatorium smokes. What? And these 3 just talk in riddles. On and on. Although Stanwyck wardrobe is gorgeous! A dumb movie. End is even dumber.
Barbara Stanwyck's wardrobe is exquisite in The Other Love. I must compliment Edith Head, the costume designer on the film for the style and elegance on show. Head also worked on Double Indemity and Sunset Boulevard to name a few. The 1940's have the present day licked when it comes to fashion.
I toiled with this in places. It's a melodramatic romantic film that travels between Monte Carlo and Switzerland but doesn't clock up much plot mileage. It feels like a film that stays in one place, but with the eager gentlemanly charms of David Niven and the ever-engaging Barbara Stanwyck, I can watch these actors do almost nothing...which is exactly what they do.

Silly love triangle motored by an idiot plot in which Niven's doctor hides sanitarium patient Stanwyck's serious condition (unnamed, presumably tuberculosis) from her for no good reason whatsoever. The moment she finally learns what's what, the movie's over. Plus, Niven is uncommonly dull here, making playboy Conte really seem like a much better match for her. Watchable enough thanks to Stanwyck and sassy best friend Joan Lorring—I was completely unfamiliar with the latter, though she was once an Oscar nominee (Supporting Actress, The Corn Is Green). Also of note as one of only nine features made by John Garfield's Enterprise Studios; three of the other eight were Body and Soul, Force of Evil, and Caught. Looked it up because it's not often I see a studio logo I don't recognize.

Needed more piano and less creepy, paternalistic doctor treating Barbara Stanwyck like a child.
In some ways an update of late 30s melodrama for a more cynical post war attitude. The emotions aren't quite as high, but well handled by De Toth. It is as destructive as contrived. Stanwyck and De Toth makes for a good pairing.
A damsel in distress wearing Christmas glittery frocks fights this impulsive and trite melodrama.
There's a weird mystical mood over The Other Love (1947). No idea why, for there is nothing mysterious about this mildly destructive romance. I guess this would be an example of following contemporary film noir trends and applying it to a standard love triangle. Perhaps to cover-up what the story lacked? And in that regard it sort of helped, for the atmosphere made this thing! Barbara Stanwyck naturally manages to shine regardless.
the plot is rather boring but barbara reminds us once again she is THE actress (i won't lie, that one-shoulder white dress earned this movie an extra star. thank you edith head, you never miss.)
Not bad, not great. Sets an almost impossible task: giving Barbara Stanwyck plenty to do even though she's on her last legs. Meanwhile, Dr. David Niven makes appallingly vague statements about her health. It's basically Stanwyck facing her mortality, which makes for an interesting film anyway. If it had been less restrained and more realistic it would have been better.
I was hoping for this to get to a point where someone would tell me what was actually wrong with Barbara Stanwyck's character and why she needed to be in a sanatorium other than coughing fits, but this is one of those frustrating movies that isn't really forthcoming with information. The only conclusion I can make is that David Niven is a psychopath and gaslighted her into thinking she was sick, which (along with the fact I gotta look for it in the subtext) makes me want to give this a lower score BUT also I was content watching something where there are barely any scenes without Barbara Stanwyck.
