A second person has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to the death of a 70-year-old Edmonton man that took place last January on New Year’s Day after the remains of the man were found in his Edmonton home last year.
Police were called to a home near 107th Avenue and 106th Street on January 1, 2023, after a report of a sudden death. The deceased, identified as Ronald Bell, was 70 years old according to an autopsy.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man deceased. When determining the cause of death the Edmonton Medical Examiner stated the death could be ruled a homicide due to the cause of death which Edmonton police withheld for investigative reasons, they announced in an update issued on May 6.
Last year, Edmonton police Det. Jared Buhler said there were clear signs of a struggle at the homicide scene. Police believe Bell was killed several days before his body was found. An active water leak and an extinguished fire were discovered inside the home upon arrival of officers.
Donn Austin Gauthier was arrested on July 11, 2023, and charged with first-degree murder, arson, indignity to a body and breach of recognizance in relation to the death.
Melissa Norris was taken into custody on May 2, 2024, and charged with first-degree murder, arson and indignity to a body in connection with Bell’s death.
