How Is Kinky Hair Made?

Understanding the process behind how kinky wavy hairs are made not only demystifies the nature of this unique hair texture but also helps in its better management and styling. Kinky hair, characterized by its tight curls and a zigzag pattern, is inherently different from straight or wavy hair types due to its distinct follicle structure.

The Science Behind the Texture

At the core of kinky hair’s structure is the shape of the hair follicle. In contrast to straight hair, which typically grows from a round follicle, kinky hair sprouts from a more elliptical or oval-shaped follicle. This particular follicle shape influences the hair strand to curl as it grows, leading to the tight coils associated with kinky hair.

Genetic Factors

The texture of one’s hair, including kinky hair, is largely determined by genetics. The genes inherited from parents play a pivotal role in defining the curl pattern, density, and texture of the hair. This genetic blueprint is responsible for the individual variations even within kinky hair types, from looser, soft curls to very tight, coarse coils.

Environmental and Health Influences

While genetics set the stage for kinky hair, environmental and health factors can further influence its texture. Factors such as humidity, temperature, and personal health can impact the hair’s elasticity, strength, and overall appearance. Proper nutrition and hydration are vital in maintaining the health and sheen of kinky hair.

Kinky hair, with its unique formation and characteristics, requires specialized care and handling. Understanding how kinky hair is made not only fosters a better appreciation of its beauty but also guides in adopting the most suitable care and styling techniques to maintain its health and vibrancy. Avoid Harmful Chemicals

Stay away from products with sulfates, parabens, and alcohol. These chemicals can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Instead, opt for natural or organic products that cater specifically to the hair.

Protective Styling

To reduce breakage and retain length, use protective hairstyles like twists, braids, or buns. Not only do they keep your ends tucked away from potential damage, but they also offer a variety of stylish looks.

Limit Heat Use

Excessive heat can damage kinky extensions, making it brittle and prone to breakage. When styling, use the lowest effective temperature, and always apply a heat protectant. Alternatively, explore heat-free styling methods such as twist-outs or bantu knots.

Regular Trims

Trimming your ends every 6-8 weeks helps prevent split ends and keeps your hair looking fresh and healthy. Regular trims can make a noticeable difference in the health and appearance of your hair.

The Tighter Curl creates friction which may result in tangling. If not properly detangled, this will lead to hair loss for natural hair or shedding for Hair Extensions.

Note: Do not play with hair while wet, otherwise, it will become very frizzy and super full.  Natural curly hair pattern naturally goes in different directions. Without controlled styling, it will dry super FREEZY!

2- Straightening Kinky Hair: Natural Kinky Curly Hair or Quality Kinky Curly Extensions like the ONYC Kinky Curly Texture can easily be straightened. Be rest assured to have your ringlet curls back after washing it! You can roller set, twist out, or flat iron this hair. Please keep flat ironing this hair at the bare and we highly recommend roller-setting the hair and straightening it with medium heat to ensure the long-lasting of your kinky curl pattern. You can also perform a strand test to determine the amount of heat suitable for the hair without compromising the curl pattern.

Colouring Kinky Hair: If you apply permanent hair color, wash your hair with Apple Cider Vinegar after rinsing off the color. Then follow with shampoo and a very mild conditioner. This is a great clarifying recipe!

Kinky Curly Hair is best worn in the gorgeous natural kinky state to keep the integrity of the curls. You can easily temporarily change the curl pattern but be mindful that constant straightening and hair color will damage your curls.

The hair, with its unique texture and curl pattern, offers a beautiful canvas for a plethora of hairstyles. The question is “How do you style kinky hair?” to best accentuate its natural charm has an immense role in addressing “How to Make Kinky Hair Look Good at Home” This goes with proper care and the right techniques, you can showcase your locks in an array of stunning styles.

Understand Your Hair’s Texture

Before diving into styling, it’s vital to understand your specific curl pattern and hair texture. The hair ranges from tight coils to zig-zag patterns. Knowing your texture helps you choose products and techniques that work best for you.

Kinky hair tends to be dry because the natural oils from the scalp don’t easily travel down the hair shaft. To maintain its style and reduce breakage, keep your hair moisturized. Use leave-in conditioners, hair oils, or creams tailored for kinky hair.

Steps to Style Kinky Hair

Let’s walk through step-by-step methods to style kinky hair while keeping it healthy and vibrant.

Step 1: Preparing Your Hair
Before styling, it’s crucial to prepare your hair. Start with clean, moisturized hair. What do you put in kinky hair to manage it? Hydrating products are key. Use a leave-in conditioner or a hydrating hair mask to ensure your hair is well-moisturized. This step helps in detangling and reduces breakage during styling.

Step 2: Detangling Gently
Gentle detangling is vital for maintaining the integrity of kinky hair. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to carefully detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. This prevents unnecessary breakage and prepares your hair for styling.

Step 3: Choosing Your Style
When considering how to make kinky hair look good naturally, choose a style that works with your hair’s natural texture. Popular options include twist-outs, bantu knots, or afro puffs. These styles not only look great but also help in protecting your hair.

Step 4: Applying Styling Products
Apply a light styling cream or gel to help define your curls and hold the style in place. Avoid heavy products that can weigh your hair down. Opt for products that enhance your hair’s natural texture and volume.

Step 5: Styling
Once your hair is detangled and prepped, start styling. For twist-outs, section your hair and twist each section firmly. For bantu knots, twist and then wrap the hair around itself to form a ‘knot’. Let your hair set for several hours or overnight.

Step 6: Unraveling and Fluffing
After your hair has set, carefully unravel the twists or knots. Use your fingers to gently separate the curls and fluff your hair to achieve the desired volume and shape.

Versatile Styling Options

How do you style kinky hair? This question is often asked by those who want to embrace the natural beauty of their kinky locks. Kinky hair, known for its unique texture and versatility, offers a wide range of styling options. When styling, you’re only limited by your imagination. Some popular choices include:

  • Twist-Outs and Braid-Outs: These styles start with wet hair that’s twisted or braided. Once dried, you unravel for defined and voluminous curls.
  • Bantu Knots: Bantu knots are small, coiled buns secured against the scalp. They’re a stylish option that also works to define curls, especially after being left in overnight and then unraveled.
  • Afro Puffs: Afro puffs are a simple yet chic way to style kinky hair. They involve pulling the hair back into one or two puffs, offering a playful and easy-to-maintain look.
  • Wash and Go: The wash and go technique allows you to wear your natural curl pattern. After washing, apply a leave-in conditioner and gel, then let your hair air dry or use a diffuser for more definition.
  • Flat Twists: Flat twists, similar to cornrows, lay flat against the scalp. They can be styled into intricate designs and are excellent for protective styling.
  • Finger Coils: Finger coils involve wrapping small sections of hair around your finger to create tight, spiral curls. This style is ideal for shorter lengths and adds definition to your natural curls.
  • Rod Sets: Rod sets involve wrapping sections of hair around perm rods to create uniform curls. They’re great for achieving a more structured curly look.
  • Pineapple Updo: The pineapple updo is a nighttime routine that doubles as a style. Gather your hair into a high, loose ponytail at the top of your head to preserve curls overnight, and wear it as a high ponytail during the day.
  • Crown Braid: Crown braids involve braiding hair along the scalp, creating a crown-like effect. It’s an elegant style that protects your ends and works well for formal occasions.
  • High Bun: A high bun is a classic and sophisticated style. It’s easy to create and perfect for both casual and formal settings.

Remember, while styling kinky hair, always use wide-toothed combs and avoid excessive heat. Embrace the natural beauty of your kinky hair, and with a bit of love and care, you can rock any style you desire.

| Weft – How To Care for Kinky Curly Hair Extensions:

Do not split the weft to avoid shedding. To ensure a strong reinforcement, try the weft sealer made specifically for the hair weave. Seal the weft if you’re heavy on your hair or wearing any length longer than 16 inches.  This is because the longer you go, the more maintenance is required for all hair types. It even becomes more difficult for longer lengths, so this will help further reinforce your weft.  Check out this video for the tutorial on how to seal wefts.

| Space The Tracks:

Installation technique is an important step in knowing how to care for kinky curly hair extensions. Make sure your stylist space the track, especially at the nape area, and do not double the track. Ensure to use split tracks at least for the last two tracks for seamless blending. If you ought to use both textures, start with two tracks of 3B-3C, and then alternate each of the tracks and use the 3C-4A for the last two tracks to ensure proper blending with your leave out.
