Editorial Reviews

Review

“Lots of people have underestimated Miss Marple, and they’re always wrong.” — J. A. Jance, New York Times bestselling author

“A joy to read from beginning to end, especially in its acute sensitivity to the contrasts between this era and that of Miss Marple’s youth.” — New York Times

“Miss Christie’s pearly talent for dealing with all the words and pomps that go with murder English-style shimmers steadily in this tale of the noisy woe that shatters the extremely expensive peace of Bertram’s famously old-fashioned hotel.” — New Yorker

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

There are many reviews stating that the text is a mess. You can't read it without being bothered. I know I only paid .99 but didn't expect to get garbage. Stop selling this version!

Really enjoyable read. Possibly the most intricate story line for a Miss Marple mystery. Characters are interesting and three dimensional. It is actually two story lines that come together, starting with Miss Marple's present of a vacation at Bertram's Hotel from her Nephew and his wife. And then you are actually in the hotel which is just as it was before the war. You follow Miss Marple's reminiscence and vacation while watching another story develop, wondering if this is a mystery and what it is. There are several misdirections, or are they? It held my interest and is one of Miss Christrie's best.

One of the better stories of Agatha Christie. Good characters, particularly the ‘bovine’ detective, Inspector Davys.

This particular Kindle version was not a good one. It had formatting flaws with apostrophes, quotation marks, dashes, and most other grammatical symbols.

Highly recommended. A great read.

At tea time at Bertram’s Hotel, the muffins are so good, the butter runs down your chin. The eggs are poached so correctly, they carry Miss Marple back to 1909. Bertram’s is as comfortable and comforting as it was in the Edwardian era. It’s almost too good to be true…

Miss Jane Marple is there for a short London holiday financed by her kind relatives. She has tea in the lounge, observing the comings and goings. Concealed in a high back chair (not on purpose!) she overhears shocking conversations. She runs into people in unexpected corners of London having secret assignations. She sees so much — while no one ever notices her, she looks so old and ineffectual.

But once again, Miss Marple is able to help the police in their inquiries. A wise old inspector discovers her and appreciates her powers of observation. Incredible things follow, including a a fatal shooting.

There are some wonderful characters in this mystery. One of my favorites is the elderly, scholarly, incredibly absentminded Canon Pennyfather.

Agatha Christie never disappoints. Providing many clues and suspects was such fun in a hotel setting. Until the end, I had not figured out the crime. A good read for the amateur sleuth!

I had a hard time getting into this book at the beginning. Not sure why, maybe a lot of characters to sort through. Ended up being a good story, but a little convoluted and hard to get through.

While it might not be the most well-known of the Miss Marple books, it does give us a glimpse of the childhood of little Jane Marple! Of course, there's a murder, and a mystery to be solved. But I focused on something we rarely see in an Agatha Christie book, the back story of one of her detectives. Miss Marple goes to Bertram's Hotel for two weeks, a treat paid for by her nephew. While there she visits places she visited as a child. Of course, things have changed and like most older people, she realizes time has gone by and changes are necessary. But she visits shops, gets items she needs and makes notes of people she sees (and later become part of the murder mystery). I'm an anglophile. I love reading and watching movies about the everyday life of British folks. For that reason, I enjoyed this Miss Marple a lot.

I came to Miss Marple late, having enjoyed Poirot's adventures and the various (and sometimes superior) stand-alones. My favorite, after all these years, remains 'The Mysterious Mr. Quin". That said, I find the 'Marple' books to be a step above Poirot. I was always put off by her film representations, but the novels are terrific. I've yet to see a Marple book given the treatment that 'Murder on the Orient Express' has received. Sure, that was a great story. But many 'Marples' are even better. She's not a doddering fool, and Hollywood could benefit from her presence.

This has proven to be the most difficult Miss Marple book to obtain on audiobook and I can't understand why. There isn't a high body count or a lot of exciting action sequences--it is after all a Miss Marple Mystery--but the story is engaging and the characters interesting. Miss Marple goes on holiday to Bertram's Hotel (where she'd stayed as a child) and takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane only to find out that things aren't exactly what they seem.

The narrator does a good job capturing Miss Marple's personality. You won't find the usual characters in this book, and none of it happens in the village of St. Mary Meade--but the characters presented are well drawn. Miss Marple is reinvigorated when compared to The Mirror Crack'd--but her lethargy in that book could be more attributed to a temporary depression rather than any real change in her vitality.

Although I wouldn't consider it the best of the Miss Marple series, it's a definite must read for all Miss Marple fans.

Along with Murder At the Vicarage, this is one of my favourite Miss Marple mysteries. The elegant Bertram's Hotel in London makes its elderly guests feel transported back to a lovely old-fashioned past, but is it too good to be true? Chief Inspector Davy (known as Father) and Miss Jane Marple certainly believe so. I've read this one several times over the years and always enjoy it.

Deceptive with the character of Father sharing almost equal footage as Ms Marple. Good one. Good plot and good suspense.
