Triston Casas placed on 10-day injured list with rib injury, Alex Cora remains ‘concerned’

Casas is dealing with a rib strain after leaving Saturday's game, the team announced.

The Red Sox will be without another top hitter in their lineup for the foreseeable future.

Triston Casas will be placed on the 10-day injured list with a left rib strain, the team announced Sunday.

Casas will head back to Boston later Sunday to be checked out by a specialist for further imaging, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters. Cora added that he was “concerned” it could be a lengthy absence for Casas.

The first baseman appeared to suffer the injury during his first at-bat of Saturday’s win over the Pirates, wincing after fouling off a pitch. He remained in the game for the remainder of the at-bat, drawing a walk.

In between frames of the first inning, Casas told Cora that he could probably stay on the field but would likely need someone to pinch-hit for him in his next at-bat. The Red Sox manager opted to pull Casas from the game at that point, giving a relatively pessimistic update to reporters on the first baseman’s status after the game.

“No, he’s not doing OK … we’re checking on him, we’ll know more over the course of the night,” Cora said. “When he came in [to the dugout], he said ‘I can play defense, but you need somebody to hit for me.’”

Casas’s placement on the injured list marks the latest injury to one of their top hitters. Tyler O’Neill is currently on the seven-day injured list while Rafael Devers will likely miss his 10th game of the season on Sunday as he’s dealt with multiple ailments. Trevor Story underwent season-ending shoulder surgery after getting hurt in the eighth game of the season while projected starting second baseman Vaughn Grissom has yet to play this year due to a hamstring injury.

The Red Sox are hopeful that Devers and O’Neill will be back in the lineup for the start of their next series against the Guardians on Tuesday. Grissom’s Red Sox debut should also come sooner rather than later as he began his rehab stint with Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

But nothing has come easy for the Red Sox in the injury department so far as they also have starting pitchers Nick Pivetta and Garrett Whitlock on the injured list. In fact, catcher Tyler Heineman, who was called up to fill Casas’s spot on the open roster, was the Red Sox’ last healthy position player on their 40-man roster that was still available from Triple-A Worcester.

Casas’s strong second half from last season has mostly carried into the start of this season. He’s hitting .244/.344/.513 with six homers and 10 RBIs through 22 games.
