Holoubek Gustaw – March ’68

Holoubek Gustaw

Holoubek Gustaw (21 April 1923, Kraków – 6 March 2008, Warsaw), husband of Magdalena Zawadzka, actor and director.

In the years 1963–1968 he performed in the National Theatre. Thanks to his acting method, which consisted in shaping his characters on the basis of a rational interpretation of the text, Holoubek became the symbol of modern acting at the turn of the 1960s. His personality and brilliance reigned dominion over each of his performances. He always made his attitude towards his characters explicit and was able to combine self-awareness, irony or scepticism with high suggestiveness and emotional ardour. His method proved most successful in his rendition of Gustaw-Konrad in Kazimierz Dejmek’s staging of Dziady by Adam Mickiewicz, performed on the stage of the National Theatre in 1967.
