About
The Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence in Shanghai is where Soong Ching-ling, or Madame Sun Yat-sen, lived for a long time and a major place she used to work on state affairs. Its main building was built in 1920 and owned by a Greek shipping magnate who built the dwelling in the shape of a ship, perhaps in honor of his adventurous shipping career.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.

Enjoyed our visit to this museum and house. The history was so interesting. The (new) museum is well presented, with a lot of interesting things inside. Unfortunately, the house is closed to visitors (they don’t want to spray in the house for COVID), so one can only walk around the house and see the garden, which is beautiful

A great lady to learn about. Her life. Her political career. Her achievements. Her writings. This residence memorial has been done up really nicely with descriptions in Chinese and English. Main house was lovely as well but quite difficult to look around if the crowd is too big. Garden was lovely.

In Shanghai - We caught the subway & walked to the Mdme Soong Ching Ling's residence. We were not able to visit it - since it is closed for a year for repairs.
Sign says - closed from Jan 1 thru Dec 31, 2018

I have a photo of the sign - but unable to download the photo on your site.

I've been here many times and I love to bring visiting friends. Song Qingling's family history is a fascinating saga, but it's not the only reason to come. This Republican-era villa is a perfect example of a historic French Concession rich residence, complete with old furniture, brass fixtures and a fabulous garden with very old camphor trees (they don't let visitors on the lawn, sadly). It's possible to join a tour, but it's best to just roam around independently. The entrance fee is 20 yuan.

People have a tendency to think that famous people are different; we forget that they are people with lives as strong and fragile as our own. The Soong residence brings to life of Soong Chingling, revered patriot and wife of Sun Yat-sen. What many people don't know is that she married him at 22 or 23 and her family was fiercely against the marriage. Dr. Sun was many years her elder. After the passing of Dr. Sun Soong Chingling worked tirelessly to try to keep China united against the Japanese, and to represent the interests of women and children. Later she was a well-known advocate for worldwide peace. Her home helps remind us of her strength but also her pain and the greatness of her spirit. By the way, directly across Huai Lai road from her home are the well-known Normandie apartments, and a short walk down the street is the home of another patriot Du Zhongyuan. Less than a kilometer away is a museum to Qian Xuesen, the father of the Chinese space program. You can get to all these attractions easily on line 10. Take the Jiao Tong University station and exit #1. Turn right on Huai Hai Lu and walk about 500 meters.

If you're visiting Shanghai & have a thirst for learning more of its history, the former home of Soong Ching Ling should be highlighted as a special & important location to factor into your program.

Address: 1843 Huahai Middle Road, Xuhui (Zhonglu). Tel: +86 21 6437-6268.

The Museum is beautifully presented & a very fitting tribute to Shanghai's most remarkable female leader who was a forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution & Honorary Chairman of the People's Republic of China.
Soong Ching Ling & each of her sisters all left their significant stamp in Shanghai's history--she was greatly loved by the Shanghainese & a true champion in her initiation of social welfare.
The two storey private residence is charming--the reception & dining rooms surprisingly small to entertain guests--when entering plastic shoe sleeves are issued to protect the original carpet & rugs which we thought a practical & smart idea.
The extensive gardens at the rear of the property although minimalist are attractive & well maintained.
For car enthusiasts Soong Ching Ling's private & official cars are on display, albeit sectioned off, in the adjacent double garage complete with original large wooden doors.
Entrance fee is very inexpensive & taking photographs allowable.

A wonderful glimpse into the life of the most famous of the Soong Sisters: Soong Ching Ling, widow of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. A graduate of Wellesley, who spent many of her formative years in the US, and who returned to China to marry Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the first President of China. Unlike her sister, who was married to Chiang Kai Shek, Soong Ching Ling supported the goals of the communists and remained in China as an honored member of the government. Respected by world leaders, it is fascinating to see her drafts of her books and famous speeches - written in English. A multi-cultural and fascinating woman leader.

The museum in the former residence of Soong Ching Ling is a highlight of any visit to Shanghai for those interested in history and the life of this remarkable woman. The museum and home have commentary in English that is very well done and help to give a sense of her contributions to the development of modern China. Note: if you are staying at a hotel near the Bund you will need to take a taxi. My wife and I found it very easy to get a cab from the street for the return trip to our hotel.

This is an excellent place to visit in Shanghai. Soong Qingling was a remarkable woman and the residence and small museum has a lovely display. The home is left much as it was when she lived there. The museum has English translations which is a blessing and rarity in Chinese museums.

Many are aware of the more illustrious husband Dr SunYat Sen,the founding father of modern China but here was a woman that has helped in the creation of history and propelled China to what it is today. For all the great strides that she had made she had remained so humble and down to earth.
The villa that has turned into a museum was built in 1920 and was owned by a german shipbuilder tycoon.
In the past Madam Soong had received many heads of states and historical figures here l;ike Chairman Mao,Zhouenlai,KimII Sung of North Korea,Sukarno of Indonesia and many more.
Some of the gifts presented to her and in the sitting room two pictures hang above the mantle piece. One that of Dr Sun Yatsen and another of Chairman Mao visiting her in 1961.
The library has many books about 4000 either in english, french ,mandarin, and russian. Some were written by Madam Soong.
The master bedroom on second floor is so cosy and has woman touches.A set of teak wood furniture and a wedding photo of Soong and Dr Sun.
The car porch has 2 cars parked one a russian made and the other limo China made Great wall limo.
Many letters written in perfect flawless english by Madam Soong to her sisters and organisations were on display. Some of her thoughts and her support for the communist China were also shown in her writings.A study room and a maid's room with a veranda LiYan'e.
The garden is one of the nicest part of this beautiful home.Lush green trees with a well lawn compound.
The Soong sisters were certainly famous,of whom one is said to love money, one loved power and Madam Soong loved China. So with this she had garnesed lots of admiration among us.
