The King and I (1956)

The King and I, a musical adapted from Margaret Landon’s book, tells the story of English widow Anna Leonowens tutoring the wives and children of the King of Siam in the 1860s.

Deborah Kerr plays Anna, and Yul Brynner as the King won an Oscar for his performance.

The film explores the clash of cultures and the evolving relationship between Anna and the King.

Featuring memorable songs like “Getting to Know You”, “Whistle a Happy Tune”, and “Shall We Dance”.

The production is somewhat stagey, except for the remarkable “Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet.

Despite some omissions from the Broadway version, the movie remains a classic with Brynner’s standout performance.
