As you drive down the long, potholed driveway to the Hostel in the Forest you feel like you are entering a different world - albeit on our part only for 1 night (those pesky mozzies). Having stayed at hostels throughout Europe and Asia I had some pre-convienved ideas of what to expect and the best advise I can give is to leave these ideas at the exit off the highway. The 'hostel' is beautifully made and the staff all friendly and enthusiastic - but this was a hostel like no other. My friend and I were the only guests on the night we stayed, and as the staff all seemed very close, we felt a little on the perimiter of the evening meal, however, the food was nice and we smuggled in a glass of wine or two! Electronic devices are not allowed, and alcohol frowned upon, so it has

Though we only spent one night here - It was a great experience. The food was amazing - The people were very friendly and accommodating, but there are a couple things to keeping in mind. - The road getting to the hostel was very very rough. Be sure to go very very slow - There was a paved road that the employee's seem to use, but none of the guests had access to it. - Make sure to bring something for the residents. It isn't expected, but it is nice to be kind. - Be wary of the weather. It was freezing the night that we stayed, they have some blankets and pillows, but make sure to bring your some. - Some of the huts do not have electricity - Specifically the Screen Hut - So keep that in mind while making reservations. - The staff changes often, but this is normal. Keep

The Hostel in the Forest is a unique travelling experience that requires one to adjust their expectations of service and accommodations. Part summer camp, part commune, part rainbow gathering, the 'Hostel" doesn't conform to any standards of customer service that one can expect from overnight lodgings. The attitude at the Hostel is "we are all guests together". The staff is not there to serve the guests only, it is a shared responsibility of all to maintain the Hostel and help each other. Any criticisms of the Hostel need to be balanced against the fact that it costs $25 a night per person, and most if not all the staff are volunteers. I spent three days here with my 9 and 11 year old daughters. My kids were enchanted, my wife - had she joined us- would have hated it. What

I have stayed at the forest hostel several times over the last 8 years and have always had a magical experience. Yes, it is not for your common traveler. Yes, it is not for neat freaks. Yes, its not for those who are yet to become "open minded". Yes, it is not for people who cant go a meal with out meat. Yes, sometimes the roosters have been known to make a bit of a racket. But all of this being said, for the travelers like me this is a welcomed compromise so that i can skip all the generic corporate hotel same ol routine nonsesne. I truly love this place and will always hold it near and dear to my heart. I have always found the help to be friendly and worthy of good conversation. However, i dont expect to be pampered by my barefooted forest friends. If you want a

I still think back happily on my 2-night stay. Truly sustainable travel: wonderful composting, organic herb garden, chickens, home-cooked dinner made with donated, bulk, or hostel-grown food. Composting toilets, outdoor showers. We swam (briefly) in an icy pond. No electricity in the open-air houses on stilts (tree houses) that are the best sleeping option, though the main building w/ kitchen has plenty of sound and light. This hostel had the best-equipped and best-stocked kitchen of any I've ever stayed in. Not everyone will enjoy this place. The drive in is rough, cockroaches invaded the kitchen after dark, and if you don't like communal meals, you may not be comfortable. But if you want to listen to wildlife at night, cook together, listen to what folks are doing to live

The guided meditation and yoga were wonderful. The place is unique and fairly well maintained but the people I came with and other guests all agreed that we felt like we were intruding. The large "staff" dominated the scene. A few staffers were truly sweet and kind but for the most part we felt they tolorated the short-term guests, but just barely. This attitude came from the top down. For the amount of people hanging out there, the spaces could be better maintained.

I stayed here 14 years ago on a road trip with my husband as newly weds, and always wanted to return. This time, I brought my sons (ages 9 and 11) with me to experience the Hostel in the Forest. It is a magical place that deeply resonates with who I am as a person. After checking in, we were introduced to and warmly hugged by several people. We settled into our lodging in Upper Peacock, which is a little cabin with a single bed and a bunk bed, and is screened on two sides. We explored the grounds and waited for dinner, where we all formed a circle, held hands, and said what we were thankful for. It was beautiful, and the food was delicious. We listened to drumming into the night. Unfortunately, the temperature plunged from the low 70s to the 40s overnight, and we all had

The spirit of the hostel in the forest is magical. Everyone, staff and guests alike, has a smile on their face. If you want a place to truly get away from the world and take a breath of fresh air, visit the hostel in the forest. It is where I go to regain faith in humanity.

The hostel in the forest is a beautiful place to spend a couple nights. I brought my husband and 2 kids here and we had a great time. The kids loved the fresh water pool and canoeing in the lake. The staff was really amazing to my entire family. The communal dinner was excellent and a great way to chat with all the guests and staff. The Treehouses were so natural and beautiful with comfy beds. We cannot wait to come back again!!
