Rob Thomas Says Wife Marisol Is Doing 'Good' After Brain Surgery: 'We're Hoping for the Best'

Rob Thomas is staying strong for his wife.

The Matchbox Twenty frontman’s spouse, Marisol Maldonado, is on the mend after undergoing brain surgery last week.

“She’s good. She’s at home recovering, so we’re hoping for the best,” Thomas, 43, told PEOPLE Thursday at the Samsung Hope for Children gala in N.Y.C.

Last Friday, Maldonado, 39, had a lesion removed from the base bone of her brain.

“We don’t know what’s gonna happen. We’re just glad the surgery went well,” Thomas says. “She has great doctors; she has a bunch of people supporting her.”

The musician took a night off from bedside duty to represent his and his wife’s animal advocacy charity, Sidewalk Angels, at the Samsung gala.

“This was a huge thing for her. Even if she was having the surgery tonight, she’d tell me I have to be here. They’ve supported us so much and given us so much money – especially now that she’s been going through a hard time,” Thomas says.

“She’s not able to do the things she wants to support the foundation, and they just came through like gangbusters, so that really helps a lot.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first health scare for the pair, who tied the knot in 1999: For years, Maldonado battled an autoimmune disorder similar to lupus.

With his wife on the mend, Thomas will get back to work soon. This summer, he announced he was postponing his solo tour for her treatment.

“I’m just on the road. I’m literally just gonna be on the road from now,” he says. “I have my whole life planned out from now to the middle of next February. So we’ll see how that goes.”
