People focus too much on the hardships so closely associated with this well known working class neighborhood when what’s really most remarkable about the tightknit community is its indefatigable spirit of rebirth and ability to stay true to its roots. Perhaps not an ideal destination for those visitors who tend to keep well within their comfort zones when traveling or those with bucket lists filled to the brim with top tourist attractions, the Ninth Ward is nonetheless there for those who are most keen to discover the places they encounter. But it’s not all about learning lessons when going to the Ninth Ward. With its “Living Museum” and “steamboat houses” and a long enduring dedication to preserving local culture, there’s more than enough to see and do during a daytime tour of the area.

This is my favorite street in New Orleans. It is filled with art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, hotels, Cafe Beignet (better than Cafe Du Monde) and a much more civilized crowd. If you want to have fun but not with hoards of drunken masses, this is the street to be.

Royal Street is one of our favorite streets in New Orleans. There is a great selection of art galleries and we have acquired several pieces of note. The antique selection is first class, but expensive.

Beautiful area, pretty houses and nice stores. I preferred this street to Bourbon street. Sadly we visited during covid and stores were still closed and the street mostly deserted. I would recommend downloading a walking tour before you go, there is much history here that you would miss without a guidebook.
Less homeless than in Jackson square, but still saw some sleeping in the street during the day.

Royal Street is fantastic, its one of my favourite streets in New Orleans. It feels very up market with art galleries, fine hotels, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Worlds away from its brash neighbour in the next street (Bourbon St)

Best high-end antique stores I've ever seen. Amazing places to browse and dream! Saw a $1900 paper towel holder in one store this visit for example! Over the top authentic stuff.
Then there are the amazing restaurants. Legendary places.

You can do a lot of walking thru the French Quarter, and this street was a breath of fresh air, from Bourbon Street. We want to return when the temps are cooler, and even more places have reopened. We were amazed at the number of antique shops on this street. It is an old street, well established with beautiful pieces . You could spend two days doing some serious shopping here, and remain walking distance of all of the good food, and music. One little shop has so many lovely little figurines. Reminded me of my childhood and of the ones my Mother had. Near by groups gather in the late afternoon to participate in walking tours. I would recommend this street for window shopping, browsing, and for serious antique purchasing. A little something for everyone. Prices range from affordable to out of this world. A lot of businesses are open, some with limited days, or hours, but several remain closed.

This is a street with so many things to look at and a walk that one can do oneself. The shops are full of colour, antiques and paintings as well as unique boutiques. Shop keepers very helpful and great to go into the shops just to browse.

Royal is one block away from Bourbon street and they have some of the best art galleries. I really enjoyed Rue Royal at 541 Royal Street. Really interesting pieces there. And the manager was so kind.

The only real negative about Royal Street is its proximity to Bourban Street - making it crowded and sometimes a bit rowdy. Other than that the architecture and shopping is really special here. Shops are upscale and the buildings are more stunning than almost anywhere else in the FQ. There are street performers and outdoor cafes. In general this is less a party area, and thus cleaner and more appropriate for a PG family experience than its neighbor to the north.

We walked up and down Royal Street several times as it lies be tween Bourbon Street bars and Chartres St eateries. The street is line with antique shops--many of which have limited hours due to covid. If you want to do serious antique shopping, I suggest you call ahead to check if open. My 3 star rating is somewhat reflective of the fact that I don't collect antiques. But it is fun to window shop on Royal Street.

Where can I hear best music from local institutions ? Any preferred time or day? Heard there are lot o local musicians around royal street and bourbon street, however not sure it’s better than river side in Jackson square.

What are the weekend store hours for the shops on Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans?

The store hours vary by the type store. The bars and restaurants and other eating places were open late. I believe the drug store at Royal and Iberville was open late too. This store also had an assortment of foods and drinks to take back to the hotel. I dont recall too many of the clothing and gift shops open too late. We walked the streets watching and listening to street musicians and I recall more looking into store windows.
I stopped in there too and lost the little card they gave me. Do you remember the name of the store?

Lots of jazz variety throughout New Orleans. If you are looking specifically for Dixieland or trad jazz, it can be found at many venues including the Steamboat Natchez dinner cruise and at bars such as the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen St. Dixieland bands often play in Jackson Square and on Royal St. near Rouse's Market. More modern jazz can be also be found in the many clubs on Frenchmen St.
wwoz radio and Offbeat Magazine (both on line) are good sources to find which bands are playing where.
