The explosive true story of fraud, embezzlement, and government betrayal. An insider’s view of what takes place behind the closed doors of agencies and drug companies, and the people tasked to protect the health of American children.

In 2000, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) carried out a secret mission to bury, skew, and manipulate data in six vaccine safety studies, in a coordinated effort to control the message that “vaccines do not cause autism.” They did so via secret meetings and backtesting health-care data. The CDC invested tens of millions of dollars in a foreign health-care data analytics startup run by Danish scientist Poul Thorsen, a move to ensure that no link ever surfaced. But fate had other ideas. The agency soon learned it couldn’t control Thorsen. In 2011, the US Justice Department indicted him for the theft of more than $1 million of CDC grant money.

Master Manipulator exposes the CDC’s hidden agenda for the cover-up. Influenced by Big Pharma money, future high-paying jobs, and political lobbyists, CDC executives charted a course different than what the findings of earlier vaccine safety studies revealed. The CDC needed an outsider to “flatten” the results of the data, while building an exit strategy: a fall guy in case the secret plan was exposed. Thorsen fit the bill nicely, conducting studies overseas. But the CDC’s plan backfired, as Thorsen took the money to the bank and the power went to his head. It would take years for his fraud scheme—funneling CDC grant money to a Danish university and then back to a CDC bank account he controlled—to play out.

Master Manipulator is a true story of fraud and betrayal. It’s a cautionary tale of the dangers of blind trust in the government and the health-care industry.

I wanted to spend some time praising James Ottar Grundvig's wonderful new book, "Master Manipulator: The Explosive True Story of Fraud, Embezzlement, and Government Betrayal at the CDC" because I think it is something unique in the canon of autism literature.

We have had the personal stories of families dealing with autism, and we have had some fine books dealing with various medical and scientific issues, but we haven't really had a book which examines at length the political culture in which this epidemic has been allowed to happen. Many of you are aware of Poul Thorsen, the Danish researcher who worked for the CDC and is now a federal fugitive for embezzling more than a million dollars to generate studies exonerating vaccines from causing autism. But what you don't know is how that happened behind the scenes at the CDC.

The Thorsen depicted in this book is certainly an intelligent man, figuring out how to data-mine a rich vein of medical information in the Danish health registry. But there is also something else in Thorsen's personality, a need to ingratiate himself to powerful patrons, and give them what they want. It is not an uncommon failing, and may be something particularly American. Grundvig makes the argument that more than anything else, Thorsen wanted to make it big in America, and saw pleasing his superiors at the CDC as just the way to do it. And he also wanted to live large, buying a limited edition Harley, Audi Quattro, Honda SUV, as well as a half-million dollar home in a tony suburb of Atlanta. That money should have been spent doing honest autism research.

Grundvig has a nice, easy to read style, and at a little more than 250 pages it is a quick read. I believe this is an important story which needs to be widely read in our community and beyond. I encourage people to read it, not to be depressed about how we have been betrayed, but to understand how fragile the facade is which keeps our children in their autism prisons. I'm reminded of what one teacher jokingly told me one day. She said, "You know, there's more than a thousand kids at this school, and only fifty of us. If they decided to stop listening to us, we'd be screwed."

People should read this book to understand one simple fact: Our enemies aren't that strong. They have been flailing for years, trying to keep this story from breaking, and I don't think anybody is more surprised at their success than they are. They know that eventually they will lose. We just need to keep the pressure on. I also have to commend Grundvig for his easy-going, even humorous story-telling. He seems like the kind of guy you'd want to hang out with, have a beer, and swap some stories. If Thorsen represents the worst of America, Grundvig's honest reporting represents the best of American traditions.

This is not the “anti vaccine “ book I thought it was. It is about the corruption destroying our babies. Well documented. The technology has long been available to have a safe vaccination program, other countries have taken the safe route decades ago, but our government chooses to poison our babies for profit. Only comment on author - allowed his raw emotional anger to affect his “descriptions”, understandable, not helpful to his cause, Glad I read the book.

Unlike the other reviewers, I came to this book not as a health critic, but as a forensic accountant. The author dramatizes an astonishing lack of internal controls and puts the psychology of embezzlement and fraud in prime position. This is rarely done, and quite hard to do - yet it is at the heart of how organizations can become prey to psychopathic leaders. If the CDC allowed this fraud to happen and if the internal controls did not work - something else is going on - and the author makes a plausible case that the weak oversight was deliberate as a means to allow a corrupt science prepare a fraudulant scientific study to underpin the CDC's agenda. If the CDC is lying about this and the FBI is collaborating, can we really believe anything the US Government says?

My criticism of the book is that occasionally the author could use an editor to fix the narrative's flow so he doesn't repeat himself, but as a self-published and self-marketed book, the author has done an excellent job. Also, the author fails to pick up on CDC as a uniformed service subject to Military law - in other words, in its cover-up of Agent Orange, the CDC is protecting its Military Industrial cronies. The Author is suitably conspiratorial on the vaccine issue, but he fails to broaden this skepticism and blindly accepts the official narratives on ISIS, 9/11, etc.

I desperately wanted to give this book a 5 star rating, but couldn't because of the extreme use of sarcasm, innuendo, and 'guessing,' which distracted from the well documented and sourced investigative reporting.
Grundvig did masterful and important work with this book but at least parts of it are negated by his (understandable) anger which devolved to name calling and sometimes cheap speculation. This story, and the ancillary awful deceptions by the CDC, needs to be gotten out there and I think would be taken more seriously without editorializing.
It's an excellent source document and beginning - may others be as persistent and thorough as Grundvig in standing up to the tyranny of big pharma and the CDC.
